"Seattle" gave the best info. To add to that:
You must call your particular airline, they all vary. Alaska Airlines delivers the pet in "over-sized luggage area" while Delta sends them to the cargo area which isn't even in the same building, for instance.
As carry-on (cats and small dogs only), it is easiest, but there is a fee ($50-75) and a limit on how many in the cabin so make a reservation.
As checked luggage, it is still relatively cheap ($50-100) but you in addition to reservations, you need an approved, hard-plastic carrier ($75 or so). AND the weather is restricted - can't be over 80-90F anywhere on the route nor under 20-30-40F so that could be a big probem in AK in Feb.
As cargo, it can get expensive. I've heard quotes up to $500. Same restrictions apply. Definitely cheaper as luggage than as cargo.
I've seen no websites that allow booking pets. You've got to call the airline and talk to an agent for that.
There are kittie and doggie drugs to dope them up for the flight. They're pretty pathetic when they can't even stand up, but some pets are otherwise stressed for the whole flight. They are prescription from your vet.
The last two times I've flown pets, I didn't need health certificates from the vet. But ask your airline. Maybe somebody still requires those.
Take down the names and phone numbers of anyone at the airlines that tells you anything. That's gotten me out of a couple of pickles when I could check my notes and say, "Well, Mary Smith at customer service at 800-FLY-HIGH said the fee was $50 and that up to 25 pound pets were allowed in the cabin." or whatever they previously told you.

The airline will be able to tell you how to do this. When my step-mom flew from Arizona to here with 2 dachshunds, they had her make sure they were in secure carriers and had food and water with them. They were kept down by the luggage hold in a pet area and were retrieved upon landing. If you call Alaska Air, they will be able to give you the detailed specifics for flying that far. (some one is kept with the animals so they aren't alone during a flight)

yes you can, I flew a cat to Alaska a few years ago. there was a $75(I think ) charge with delta to have the cat in a carrier, it had to stay on the floor. and Alaskan airline had a $50 charge for this. It was VERY stressful for the cat, he even pooped in the carrier on the first take off. he would sometimes freak out on the flight and run in circles in the carrier and I would take him to the washroom to calm him down. your not allowed any bags in the washrooms, but the flight attendances understood and looked the other way. this is your best option for Feb, I don't think they have heat in the cargo area. And take him to the vet and ask what kind of option he has, he might be able to give him something to knock him out for the flight, I wish I thought of that.

Hi there...getting a plane ticket for yourself is easy but getting one for your pet takes a little more planning. Airlines have always restricted flight during extremely high or low temperatures, but a new federal rule, as well as some pet air travel tragedies, have resulted in more drastic changes within the airline industry. These new guidelines and restrictions may cause you some headaches and frustration but keep in mind that they have been put in place for your pet's safety.
Each airline has separate rules. Some have pet embargo rules, which result in times during the year that pet travel is not allowed. Some airlines no longer accept pets and rely on special pet carrier or animal transport companies. Make sure you check with the airline well in advance regarding their pet travel rules, as they can change without notice.
Have your vet issue a health certificate stating that your cat is healthy and able to travel, and that all vaccinations are up to date. Some airlines require microchipping so it doesn't hurt to get this done so if your cats gets lost and end up in a shelter, having vaccination records will help you find and get him out faster.

some airlines allow you to purchase an extra seat for a small pet in a carrier, others require you "check" your pet and it will stay in a designated area similar to where they keep baggage. Call the airline to see what they permit.

The airline carrier or your travel agency. Ask them, they move animals every day. Just give them a phone call to find out.
