When I lived in NY you had to take a course, fill out an application, get finger printed and pay a fee. The best thing to do is call the local law enforcement department and find out who gives the classes in your area. They explain all the details in the class. Be careful though, the permit isn't good in some areas around NY City (unless they've changed it since I moved).

you have to go to the sheriffs dept to pick up the app.10$ there is a lot of paper work to fill out they do a background check mental illness check, check with the feds , alot of checking you will be finger printed and photoed it cost about 120$ in '95 when i got mine be warned you are not guaranteed to get one after you go through all this and spend the money and the money is non refundable if you are denied oh yeah you must be at least 21 yrs old
