I've been working in the restaurant industry going on ten years now. I've always been told I'm an excellent server, maybe I'm not, according to some people. Now, when I say "most" don't look over that word. Some people call it stereotyping.. I say "go ahead, prove me wrong." In fact, some places that I work, the servers and I (yes, Afrifcan American servers too) argue about who's going to have to take the table with black people or other minorities. Is this stereotyping? To a point yes. But when I've been proven right time after time with $70 tabs and 3$ tips (If that) I think it becomes something more than that. It becomes reality. It really is almost comical. Now, keep in mind, I have a few African American regulars that tip excellent. (20-25) percent. And I also have some white trash that tip horrible too....but I will say in all honesty, that for some reason, black people and minorities in general tip horrible.

Everyone who answered that this is racist or ignorant needs to wait tables for just one night. It is just the truth. They don't tip because THEY are racist or they don't think they should have to pay our wage.
I had a table last night of 16 black people. I went way above and beyond to make sure that they had everything they needed. Mind you I had 4 other tables I was waiting on. They ran me all over the restaurant for Shirley temples and extra this and extra that. Every single time I came back with something they asked for something else. They weren't happy with the food. I fixed it the best I could. I was trying so so hard to make them happy. In the end they didn't want to pay the bill and they definitely were not going to pay the 18% gratuity. By the end they had me crying. I am a single mom who works very hard and I treat everyone with respect. Then they had the nerve to say that I had an attitude problem because I didn't get my tip. They didn't even think they should pay for the food. They were absolute jerks to me for no reason. There is no way that anyone deserves to be treated that way or talked to like that.
I shouldn't have to go home in tears over dinner.
I can't figure out what I can do to get a good tip. I have done everything I can but they are never happy.
Maybe they work minimum wage jobs as well and I am sure they work very hard but they don't get tips. I understand that makes it hard for them to tip us. It is just the way it is.
You have to tip your server.
Understand that if the industry changed to non tipped servers they could never pay the servers a reasonable wage. Not only would you have a hard time finding good servers but noone would every go above and beyond to take care of their guests.
Not only do black people want perfect service and want you to pay attention to every one of there needs but then they don't want to tip for it. So good luck going out to eat, you get what you pay for.
IF YOU DON'T WANT SERVERS THAT GET TIPPED THE PRICE OF FOOD WILL GO WAY UP AND YOUR SERVICE WILL GO WAY WAY DOWN.

I dont agree with you, I've been in the hotel industry for 5 years now, and I would say that Asians (specially Japanese) and Europeans are the best tipper in the world.
In Asia, most hotels and restaurants already have a 10% -15% service charge automatically included in the bill, so an extra tip is not required. Most minorities dont know that servers gets paid 2-3 dollars per hour and the rest depends on tips...
I'm a minority but I tip based on how good the service is, up to 50% for excellent service.

I have a good friend that works at a popular restaurant here about 15 miles south of cleveland, oh. He serves a VERY popular member of the Cleveland Cavaliers and his "crew" often. They are ALL African-American and he has run up tabs of $500+ and left only $10. I promise that I am not lying and whenever they dine in there, they always send the new servers over to wait on them now. I am not saying that it is a common thing with minorities, because I have never waited or bartended, but I just thought this story was comical. I make next to nothing as far as money goes, but if the server was good, I will not hesitate to give 25-30%

i'm going to easily furnish you an opinion from traveling international extensive. some minorities, working occasion Taiwanese in all risk do no longer tip by way of reality in Taiwan no person tips everybody. distinctive minorities do no longer tip by way of reality they think of of that jointly as you're actually not any extra stinking prosperous, you a minimum of have lot additional money than they do. as at as quickly as as I lived indoors the States (and dealing for the gov't), i grew to become allowed 10% tip. I often paid 15% plus/minus attempt of the waitress. With good provider it went to 20%, and jointly as the waitresses handed over you, it dropped to 1c - just to teach that i did no longer ignore. Now I stay in a detrimental united states of america, and as at as quickly as as i'm getting good provider, I tip 0.5 an afternoon's wages & i'm remembered. (at $3 an afternoon, it is not plenty for me, a minimum of)

Proper tipping, for good service, is not a rule, but for me I will give 20% for good service. Many people dont realize how little a server would make without their tips and this seems to go along socio-economical lines.

In other countries the tip is not so steep. In some it is only 5% and 10% at the most. So I imagine that they don't know they are doing wrong- or they don´t like the service.

ok minorities happen to be poor
and they also on so many cases are not encultured about the right perecentage which varies from cutlure to culture
also it depends on how they view you, they see as a white guy am going to stereotype there for a minute and they say heyhe's white and am sure a lot of white people tip him more than we will.
lame but true
also it depends on how you come to them as, how do they see you? if they can identify with you on even a minute simple detail, you got ur tip.
try to do that and see if it works.

You are right here a list of how it goes....
!. Europeans who don't live in the states-no tips
2. Blacks-who barely leave anything
3. Mexicans-who work in our field-5-10% if u are lucky
4. Don't forget the Gyspy's- who run your butt off for a buck or
two and sometimes don't even leave this after they try and get
out of the bill!
Good Questions don't these people realize that we get payed 3.09 an hour to serve them hand and foot.
And please by no means am I trying to group people in catogrys but as a whole this is the way it is 90% of the time!
PS I have been in the biz for close to 30 years-It doesn't get better! People are just plain cheap, but God forbid if we came into there place of bussiness and said u did bad so we are taking it out of your check!

Hey, i get tips too, and i find what your saying to be accurate. I think it's either because they don't have the money, or because they don't like crackers like us. Whatever, i try to brush it off and service everyone the same anyway. Remember that it's not really between you and them, it's between you and God in the end.

what a HORRIBLE sterotype!!!!
i think if the service is well worth it and the server does a good job, then they will get a good tip.
but if the service is crappy, the server was never around, etc, then hell no, im not going to give them a good tip.
but thats a sterotype. ive tipped a waiter $40 before.
white people don tip to great either!
NOT ALL MINORITES ARE POOR!
