I am a bartender from the Southwest, and the best answer that I've seen listed above is Emms! Although recipes usually call for just tequila, triple sec and lime juice, you really do need the sweet and sour mix in there. It counteracts the sweetness of the lime juice and takes the bite out of the alcohol. As for the tequila, I prefer the flavor of Two Fingers, Patron Silver, or Sauza Commemoritivo. ANY Jose Cuervo Tequila is not good (just good marketing). Also, first try your recipe WITHOUT the Grand Marnier. Although fashionable, it is expensive and it alters the taste quite a bit.
Tip- Try finding out your special someone's favorite fruit. You can mix it in a blender and have frozen margaritas.

Other suggestions- If you're having a party, your local party store sells colored margarita salt . They also sell margarita glasses, umbrellas, festive straws, and beads to attach to your margarita glasses.

Well, margaritas are made with tequila, triple sec and a splash of lime juice.

Go top shelf all the way! Here's my recipe.

Get Patron or another high quality tequila (access to fine Tequila from Mexico is a bonus, I'm sure!) and use that. Go a few steps finer than Cuervo - and a good Liquor Barn or Liquor Warehouse store will likely have a good conisseur who can lead you to a good decision. Patron is a fine tequila, tho, so if you don't get a better suggestion, go with that.

Instead of regular boring triple sec, use Grand Marnier, which is an orange flavored liqueur. Its also a little thicker and smoother than Triple sec.

Lime juice is lime juice. There's really no way to improve on that, but just use a small (!) dash of it. Don't overdo it! Less is more!

Soft fresh fruit is also a good possibility. If you're going to go strawberry-margarita style, look for strawberries (or any fruit) that is softer and mushier than what you'd normally eat on its own. Don't go to the extreme and buy the fuzzy molded fruit either. But if you're blending it, the flavor will be more apparent and consistency of the drink (no lumps) will be better with soft fruit. I know it sounds a little gross, but for drinks, it is ideal.

Don't forget to salt the rim of the glass. Get some toothpicks, and maybe an orange wheel and a lime would be ideal for flair. If you are looking at a tropical theme, get the little umbrella toothpicks.

The last thing you need is a smile and some laughter. Good luck!

The basic margarita recipe consists of three ingredients - Tequila, Cointreau (triple sec) and fresh lime juice.
The true art of making margaritas lies in the ideal ratios and the pizzaz with which it is served.
The ratio for margarita mix can vary from equal parts of each ingredient to 3:2:1 tequila: cointreau: lime juice.
The triple sec is an orange liquer that adds a sweet-and sour flavor to the cocktail.
Different flavors can be substituted in the recipe for the triple sec to make interesting variations.
Shake the margarita with ice and serve in salt rimmed glasses. You can add Grand Marnier instead of Triple sec for concocting an exotic margarita.

Good Luck.

For something different, try this. Run lemon around rim, dip rim in sugar. In a blender place ice, milk, chocolate sauce, nip of kahlua, 1/2 nip frangelico. Blend til ice is crushed. Pour into margarita glass drizzle with choc topping/sauce and top with cherry/strawberry whatever. Enjoy!!! Absolutely delicious. Remember this is supposed to be a "frozen" cocktail".
