One of the bailiffs at a mid-Kent syndicate regularly fishes for pike using big flies, he uses a light(15 - 20lb)wire trace which casts really well, you shouldn't not use a wire trace really, as the pike will bite through everything else. With that, just use a normal fly line as you would trout fishing, with a 6 -7 foot lenght of mono between the fly line and the trace wire. Use the larger flies that are used for salmon, as well as the proper ones developed for the pike. Good luck

I would never go after pike without a wire trace, yes you can fly fish for them but you need to beef up your gear. Use a 9 to 10 ft rod rated aftm 9 you can get specialist rods, you'd have to go to a good tackle shop for them. The flies need to be rather on the large size to catch pike as there will be no vibrations as from a plug etc to draw the pikes attention.Hope this helps a bite, its good fun.

Under normal conditions I use a Maxima Ultra Green 2# or 4# test line blood knotted to my heavier 8# tippet. In ultra clear small streams I go to the Flourocarbon 2# test. You'll save a lot of money over buying the tapered leaders the fly shops sell.

You will need a braided nylon leader, but I have never heard of pike taking a fly, you wuold probably do better with a deep fished lure!
