Well that just depends, if i like the guy i'd much rather hear the take you out to dinner one so if you are sure she likes you then go for this on, but if your unsure about how she may fell about you then try the wanna hang out sometime line on her first, if she agrees then use the taking her out for dinner as a suggestion and possibly a few others, then let her know that it wasn't just a casual thing to say by taking what you said seriously by setting up a time and place, this way she can know that you don't want to be just friends and maybe she'll hint to you she feels the same. Good Luck Hun!

"Can I take you out for dinner." This guy is sure of himself - knows what he wants to do and isn't afraid of rejection, nor is he insecure about his ability to show me a nice romantic time. Attractive!
If a guy asks "want to hang out sometime" that's like saying he wants to become friends and maybe see if he really wants to date ... if he wants a date, something romantic, asking to hang out sometime seems kinda weaselly and weak.

The risky more formal way would be to aske her out to dinner. It shows sincerity and commitment to wanting a date. Want to hang out can be taken another way and is not so much as a commitment to asking someone out. Meaning you can deny asking her out. Go w. asking her to dinner it's so much more mature.

i would rather have: can i take you out for dinner, only because, if you say want to hang out sometime means that you'll call her when you get around to it..at least if you go out then you can see if you want to go out again..after that, then you can say want to hang out sometime..

"Can I take you out to dinner?"
That makes me feel that there is interest in knowing me as more than just another "buddy". Buddies hang out.

can i take you out for dinner
the other one can be misleading and it kind of implies that you just want to be friends.
