Get a really good pair of shoes so you do not put any unnecessary strain on your feet and knees.
Walk on the ground versus pavement or cement when you can, because it is easier on your joints.
Always make sure to dress for the weather and take water with you.
Walk fast enough so that you get a work out but not so fast that you cannot comfortably carry on a conversation.

I basically to it to cut out driving. Start small like the post office or the grocery store and work your way up to the mall or whatever. Now I am at a 10mile radius. Make sure you have a good companion like an Ipod it makes it much more bearable,.

Walk till you can feel your breathing and heartrate increase, just breathing heavy, not puffing and panting. Keep walking at that rate for 20 minutes. Do that every day, it's great for you.
