There are several avenues you can take. You can talk with your primary care physician, who should know of agencies in your area that offer counseling on a sliding scale fee. You can contact the local branch of your state's health department. You can go to a walk-in care center and explain your situation when you check in. You can look through the Yellow Pages and call local agencies. You can even talk with your state legislator (legislators don't just make laws; the best ones will do just about anything to help constituents who need health care). And, of course, you could do a search on Google for local agencies.
If you ever feel as though you might hurt yourself or others, do not hesitate to go to the emergency room. If you don't have transportation or don't think you can drive, have a close and understanding relative or friend take you, or you can even ask the police to take you (the police don't just arrest people).

You could look through the phone book for the numbers and addresses of social services mental health care, or check into the hospital, state mental hospital, for a psychiatric evaluation which hopefully doesn't send you up the river forever. They don't take too long. Some states it's only a six month program. Then they will set you up with outpatient therapists and doctor. You don't need insurance for the state hospital. They won't release you high and dry with no way to receive your therapy even if your penniless.

Go fill out paper work at your local srs place. They have medical benifit there that you can sign up for. Then you can find a therapits that excepts your insurance through srs & you will have a small copay. Like in Kansas you pay 2 or 3 dollars to to a therapisdt or a doctor. Try that they should help you.

Ok I dont know how much this will help you . But I live in NJ, and have major depression and bi polar disorder. I was in the same situation your currently in as far as being "poor". I dont know if you have or can. But I went to the local hopsitals crisis center. Had my 3 day stay while they "evalutated" me. But upon getting out. I was directed to sessions that cost me 5 dollars a day,I got list upon list of doctors that work on a sliding scale as far as cost of visits. I also go free meds for a while as well till I got on my feet. And while I was in the crisis center, the social workers set everything up for me as far as appointments, dates, any kind of state paperwork etc. May not be the best route but it was the best for me. And now I have so much knowledge on the condition, where to get help, statistics etc.....
Good luck to you

In Australia you have to go to a welfare organisation, like the salvation army. We are also covered by medicare, where you can go to a doctor and get a referal to a mental health proffessional. If you shop around, there may be some cheap counslers who can be quite good. Also you could try a phone line service, these are quite good too.

It depends on where you live. In some states the mental health will take in the poor patients. I some states you get on state insurance and get mental health, In our state they have state insurance but they also have free clinics for medical and mental health one day a week. Call the disabilities office in your area and they can help you get assistance.

go to the local health department and ask there... or if you have a personal physician, ask him/her... most doctors are qualified enough to at least offer some help
