Actually there is no need to contantly flip the pages of a book to find words that u're unfamiliar with and learn vocabulary from there.

Build your vocabulary from words that you know. Maybe you have found a word "animosity". By looking at the sentence, try to guess the meaning using contextual cues. After which, double check with the meaning in the dictionary. You build up more vocabulary by trying to think of words that has similar meaning as 'animosity'. For example, 'anger', 'resentment', 'displeasure etc. You can even use the thesaurus to help you.

After which, check the dictionary to find out the differences between these words. They might have similar meanings but used in different contexts and have different degrees. So learning english words is like an exploration. Once you're able to see connections between these words, u find learning them more meaningful. This is called building up from words that you know and it makes learning words easier.

Alternatively, you can use build up from words that contain another word. For example, words containing the word 'up'. you might find a word in a book "upstream". from there you try to think of words that starts with "up". eg. upsurge, upstage, upset. and later u can check the dictionary with more words like these. u look at the meanings and see how they are related to the word "up". this will help you to remember better. this method is called word map.

English is such a strange language--there are rules for usage that have many exceptions that you can only learn by learning them one at a time. Sorry.

though it is indeed practically difficult to remember words taken from book/s, there is no other way, (at least for me) to remember word/s than to use it.
in my readings i jot down words that are unfamiliar and i dont mind browsing the dictionary for its meaning.
