this rich jewish guy goes up to this poor jewish teacher and says: "teacher, how can i have eternal life?"
and the poor jewish teacher said: "you have to sell all your possesions and give them to the poor and follow me"
the rich jewish guy said: "see ya, i'd rather go to hell"
the teacher then said, "it's really hard to get into the kindom of heaven, especially if you are wealthy"
then one of the teachers followers said, "then who can be saved, if they have to give up all their possesions"
so, my question is....if it is true you have to give up all your possesions to be saved, then why are there so many people who call themselves christians who have a lot of possesions...is it because they are not saved?

The point here is that people focus on materialistic things. They spend all their time acquiring things, takign care of their things, polishing their things, working to buy more things...where does one have time to focus on God and their soul in all this??
You don't truly have to give it all up...but turn it off, put it on pause, stop and look at the world through the eyes of one who has nothing, envision yourself with nothing, and having to put all your trust in God, that he will get you through this life somehow. Priests are not allowed to own anything (at least in the Catholic church). They are free to move around whereever Gods work calls them. Imagine what it would be like if you were taken care of like that. The church takes care of the priests, but imagine if you were a priest so to speak and God took care of you and guided your life.
Do you think Paris Hilton stops to think about God and thank him for her $5000 Gucci purse and other things she buys each and every day? I doubt it. If she did she would think MY GOD...this money could feed 5000 people for a year in Africa...you would not be thinking about yourself if you learned to live a life with no possessions. It would do everyone good to experience something like that, even for a month...kind of like a wilderness trip into your soul!

YES, DEAR, I BELIEVE EVERYTHING HE SAID.
The poor Teacher never said the wealthy could not get into Heaven.
What He was saying is that some "rich" people use money and riches as a god and idolize it. If a person is serious about God and going to Heaven, he or she will not worship money, but will help the needy all they can. The Teacher also doesn't tell us to give up all our possessions for He said that if we pray for our needs and ask for them, we will be given them. This also means possessions. But if you use the possessions as an idol like some people do their cars and homes, then that is when the possessions send you to hell.
Besides, It is in a Christians heart to help others and then we are blessed even more.
If you are from the Political Correctness Institute, why are you mixing politics with religion? Just a question since no one likes for Christians to mix them......

That's called "Social Darwinism", that idiotic idea the rich should survive and the poor should die, and that people who are "unfit" (the mentally ill, the mentally retarded, the political outcasts, the jews, the non-Caucasians, etc.) should be euthanized.
The funny thing is, that ideology and the name "Social Darwinism" was invented by the robber-barons of the late 19th century, and NOT by atheists or Darwin himself. It was turned into eugenics and borrowed by the Nazis (who were christians, by the way).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_darwinism
It is done by many/most christians in an attempt to rationalize selfish behaviour. On a percentage basis, you are more likely to find buddhist monks living by "christian principles" (poverty, helping others, etc.) than any christians, and the buddhists don't even believe in the godcrap. Come to Asia and you'll see who is "living the life of christ".
"Social Darwinism" would have been as appalling to Darwin as "christians" would be to "jeebus" (if such a person had existed). Anyone who read Darwin's work will know he was against such things (eg. he spoke out against slavery).

The poor jewish teacher didn't say it was IMPOSSIBLE for the wealthy to enter the kingdom of heaven, he just said it was more difficult - I believe it's because the wealthy have more faith [depend more ] in themselves, their wealth and what they can do, rather than relying on their creator to provide what they REALLY need (forgiveness, love, compassion, hope, etc.). I don't understand why so many "christians" so avidly seek material wealth - I think it's human weakness, but God still loves them!

Hey you're taking it out of context here.
Here's the real verse Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good[a] Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”
17 So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good?[b] No one is good but One, that is, God.[c] But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments
When Jesus asked the rich man to sell his belonging, Jesus was testing him. This man said that he obey God's commandment. But he had no understanding of the word good. So Jesus tested him, if he obey the first one, which is "You shall have no other gods before me'. When he put his money first, then his money is his god. He can't serve God and money at the same time.
So that mean he also lied, because he said he obey God's commandment, while he can't keep the first one.
Who said that Christian can't be blessed ? God never said that. But you don't put your money first before God. You should be a steward of what has been given to you, not a slave. Again don't take any verse out of context.

the place in the bible where you got that from says "if you want treasures in heaven sell everything you have" not "to go to heaven/have eternal life sell your possesions."
the poor jewish teacher said "keep the commandments" when the rich jewish guy asked "teacher, how can i have eternal life?".
"i already did that" answered the rich jewish guy.
then he enumerated the commandments dealing with human relations but not with relationship with God. so Jesus told him to sell his stuff, because they became his "god" (at least thats my interpretation of it)......
so its hard to go to heaven, when your wealth is more important to you than God

He also said "Blessed are the poor in spirit". The problem isn't what you have it is what you put first in your life. If you put God first and do not cling to your possessions it is OK to have them. If you are poor and have nothing, but want to have material possessions more that you want to have God you are worse than the Rich young man. It is not about having or not having material things, it is about how attached you are to them and what is the center of your life.

Wow you have looked at the Bible ,
But you did not read were Jesus said no one can enter the kingdom of heaven unless they are born from above
and to be born from above you must be reborn again
and this is how you are saved for that's is why Jesus died so that you and i may have eternal life
Remember Jesus loves you

In response to Jojo's answer to this Q. The "eye of the needle" that the bible is referring to is a tunnel through a wall, mostly a wall into a city. What a camel would have to do is off load all the possessions and get on his knees to go through the tunnel. Likewise a rich man has to set his possessions to the side and get on his knees to pray to god.
God Bless

Jesus said "deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me". Jesus wasn't looking for disciples who said "I'll follow you if I can fit you into my schedule". A lot of so-called believers today don't really want to follow Christ. They just want a little fire insurance that doesn't cost them very much. If your possessions or your money is coming between you and Christ, you must be willing to give them up. There's nothing wrong with owning possessions or money just as long as those possessions don't own you.
