Yesterday my computer wouldn't load Windows XP completely. While booting, the regular Windows splash screen came up, but then instead of showing the desktop, I just saw the cursor on a black field for a few seconds, then just a black screen. The computer would boot completely in Safe Mode, but would not do a normal boot when I tried it multiple times. Today, though, the computer boots normally. What could have caused this problem? How can I prevent it from happening in the future?

Windows is finicky, and the problem could have been as simple as "Windows hates everybody." But if it's not a problem any more I say don't bother trying to track it down.

Computer systems at the best of times are not always stable and occasionaly have a little "personal time".

The cause of this could be anything from dust in your computer box to a hardrive failure.

Windows is also prone to all sorts of internet nasties like trojans , worms and virues unlike other systems like Linux and Mac, you should not rule these out either as sometimes they can actually attack your BIOS system which controls your computers boot up.

If I were you I would run a full system scan with your antivirus and then back up you my files on to discs just in case.

failing that, look at Linux as an alternative to Windoze

It was most likely a problem with the MBR (Master Boot Record). The MBR is checked before the computer starts up for the most recent settings that the operating system used to load. After you started in safe mode your computer created a new MBR to load from.
