im looking for some ideas how to store toys so that they are easy to take out when my children (under 4) want to play and easy to put away when they are done. They hv lots of toys which are scattered all over the place esp the ones which have small parts.
Will the open shelving system in their play room work? thanks in advance.

Open Shelving is great! A few things to consider...if there are a lot of small parts, or doll clothes, etc, you could get a large square shelf compartmentalized into other small squares, like at target.com or ikea.com. Make sure it is sturdy enough for a childs bedroom so it wont fall over or anything. Then get some pullout bins to store the toys in. Each bin is big enough for toys and toy accessories, but small enough to be able to keep things that go together, together. This way, when you put the toys away, they each have a place to go, and when its all done, it looks organized and clean, not like a mess of toys that could easily fall. Hope this works!

I like the plastic totes with drawers. Just slide them under the bed. When the kids have to put their toys away all they have to is slide a drawer out and put the toys in. They are great.and very inexpensive.

There are many ways to store toys.

Recycle as many container of various sizes as you can including shoe boxes, empty plastic diaper wipe containers, tuppleware containers, oatmeal tin, coffee tin, biscuit containers, ice cream containers and margarine containers. You can then put them in a toy chest, in a drawer or on a toy shelf to organize small items and parts including small cars, Little-People kind of toys, beads, and crayon.

Use shoe bags to hang small items such as bean bag animals and small dolls. Hang them on closet or room doors.

Use fabrics as a hammock to hang stuffed toys.

Use big boxes to store big items like trucks, ball and big stuff animals. Photocopy paper box or Rubbermaid big box with either a snap-on lid or zigzag lock are good toy storage system for storing such toys.

Hang plastic buckets with handles on pegs for small toys or pieces.

Get a wire rack organizer and hang it on a closet door.

Use suitcases to store toys which are not used frequently -- store them underneath the bed.

Invest on plastic or wire chest of drawers. If the drawer is small enough, small items like toy cars can go straight into there. Unlike bins, this toy storage system gives almost no chance for the toy to become spilled.

Get nice wicker baskets for both practical and decorative function . You can put them on a shelf and they will function like a drawer. Or you can just place them in a prominent place and arrange the stuffed toys neatly in them. Wicker basket is a very neat and artistic way to store toys.

Good Luck. :)
