welcome to the club!!
my cat is a little thief too.
he will steal my ponytail elastics, he will even take them right in front of me,he has taken to putting the elastics in his food dish,I guess either for safe keeping,or he knows I wont want them back after they smell like kibble.
other times he will take my dangle earrings, bracelets, etc, he will even lift the lid on my jewellery box and take something and stick them in his dish,if I cant find a certain earring I know the first place to look.
I think they take thing that belong to their owner as some sort of love memento,or they just like to play Hot and Cold with us.

Reading over the other answers I see I'm not the only one with a pony tail holder issue, she steals those quite often. If I happen to fall asleep with one in my hair tied loosly - it will not be there in the morning. She hides things under the bed and I have some shelves of stuffed animals I've saved since I was a child and when I'm not looking I'll notice one is gone but always find it under the bed - she doesnt destroy them just hides them - it's really very cute.

Some cats are rather mischievous, and like "pretty things" just like you and I. I once had a dog that keep steeling my gloves and burying them, and later I would see a small piece of "finger" sticking out of the ground. I have a Siamese cat that steels things, and also sleeps with her head in my house slipper, therefore, I'm not surprised.... I also think that means she/he loves you, by taking something that belongs to you, to keep for his/her very own.

My cats don't take jewlery but my younger one ( One is 2.5 the other almost 6) has claimed a stuffed penguin that wears a scarf as her own. Samantha the penguin is almost as big as she is & I will find her all over the house. Idgie drags her around kneed her down & then sits on her. I guess thats her equivilent of a pillow of her own. I guess as long as she doesn't pee on my dolls thats ok.

Yep! My cat has a thing for my pony tail holders. I find them under the couches all the time when I vacuum and countless times I have caught her sneaking off with one. She has even gone so far and to try to take them out of my hair!

our cats do not take things and run off and hide them...but our little dog does...
sounds to me like your best bet would be to put away anything you don't want kitty taking where she cannot get at it...put your jewelry into a box or case...the same for any other small items (like ponytail holders!) kitty might be interested in...if your cat can't get ahold of things, then she can't run off with them...cats are very clever...you will have to do some thinking, and outsmart her!

My cat must be related to LoveMyLab's. He runs off with hair ties like you wouldn't believe. I swear, I buy new packages every month, and I have NO idea where they go. But I do see him running off with one in his mouth. Just now he ran off with the little ring that comes on the milk jug, that you rip off before untwisting the cap. I'll find that someday...
My other cat steals food and hides it. She's stopped doing that so much, but she would grab food, and then go munch on it later.

my cat does stuff like this only its my ponytail holders. I will find them in the dirty laundry. Laying in the kitchen floor in the dinning room and also in his toy box. It gets agrivating especially when you spend 15 mins trying to get your hair into a ponytail ( I have very long thick hair ) and then u reach over and there are no holders grrrrrrr. but you gotta love the lil furballs :)

Yes i have a clyptokitty too. Sock, jewelry, etc. If it belongs to me then I have to look all over the house for things the cat has taken from her human. Not sure why they do it but yes it does happen.
