Shepherds of any kind. It is in their nature to help on farms and are easily trained to help wrangle animals. Wonderful farm dogs!!

I have a border collie mix that I got in Oklahoma 9 years ago immediately moved him to Las Vegas. I had horses, and grandsons, he is always trying to "herd" whatever he can. It is obvious he would have been great with sheep or goats. Altho, it would depend on what jobs you have planned for your farm dog, or do you just want a dog to keep out the other "critters"?

there are about 50 good working farm dog breeds, first you need to tell us what you want the dog to do, what will its job be? Then
yoou can select a dog based on that information

Aussies (Australian Shepherds) are awesome but they need work and lots of room to run. They should still be an inside dog though. Border Collies are great as well but even more active than Aussies. Then you have Australian Cattle Dogs as well. They're very cool dogs in my opinion.
Edit: You didn't say no BC's when I wrote this. What could you have against them? They are rather smart buggers which can be a pain, maybe that's it...
Edit2: What the devil are you planning for this dog?

There are various kinds of sheepdogs they all are cute and scruffy and perfect for farm work. Do some research next time you talk to a vet ask for some more suggestions.

I would suggest that you get a Great Pyrenees. If you get a good one they work animals well and can become very protective. And they are almost big enough to ride. About the same as the Newfoundlander Rescue Dog.

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD, hands down. I've spent a lot of time on AZ cattle ranches, etc. and these are THE best farm/ranch dogs, extremely smart and protective, awesome with farm animals, cattle, etc.
I cannot recommend them highly enough!

Border Collies are excellent farm dogs, very intelligent and easy to train.
I'm curious why you say no Border Collies. You didn't say that when I originally posted this. They're natural herders and good-natured.
