I have a 5 month old minature dachshund and I just noticed that she is constantly flapping her ears and shaking her head. I also noticed a couple of spots towards her tail and a couple on her butt. Took to vet and he said it was not mange. Several people have told me that it could be allergies???? Also, i just started giving her wet puppy food. She was only eating dry. I also noticed she has reallyl stinky breath!!! Any help???????

Really stinky breath is because of her phase of teething.. No help for that, until the new teeth come in..Hair loss is likely allergies..Skip the canned food and feed a premium kibble, such as Solid Gold, or Wellness, that is made for dogs with allergies..
this is a great supplement for dog s with allergies, that really reduces their allergic reactions> http://springtimeinc.com/product/88/2
read the 'letters', as they are genuine..

Hi there..

Well I am definitely not a vet or anything... LOL but my mom is. What is going on is your dog may be having food allergies. Since I do not know what type of dog food that you feed... if you don't already feed your puppy Eukanuba or Iams. These doggy foods are the best out there, I feel anyway. I too have a mini dachshund and she did have the same problem and come to find out it was food allergies! I hope that everything works out for ya and when you pin point the allergy I could almost bet that the hair will grow back! Good luck!

I agree with Bladedog about it being allergies, but I would look into holistic foods such as Wellness, Solid gold, Natures Recipes, and Canidae, etc. They are more expensive initially but in the long run they are cheaper because you feed less. I would stay away from any foods (including canned and treats) that contain: corn, soy, wheat, egg, and beef. These are top allergy problem foods. Also stay completely away from Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul. It is made by Diamond and they had a big problem with some of their products,(food made dogs die) it was the corn in the food, it turned toxic, it was not this particular brand of theirs but I would not take the chance.
As for bad breath have the teeth checked. Dachshunds are prone to periodontal diseases and some have problems losing their milk teeth.
About head shaking, did the vet check for ear infection?

Could be a food allergy based on her breath. Try switching to something high quality with less grain like ProPlan Select (you want the Select not the regular). That or Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul if you can find it. I found it at a local feed store the other day.

My dog had the same problem..it is allergies, she is starting out young. My dog needed a cortisone shot during the summer now during the winter we just use baby hydrocortizone on the bald spots...and raw areas and this spray from wally world that tastes bad to the pup/dog...it worked well for me. The breath...is a constant thing...you could start with some bone from petland that has mint in it...hope i helped ya...oh and i try not to change her food to often daschunds tend to be very picky(at least mine is)
