Originally Microsoft was spelled Micro-soft

Paul Allen joins MITS (Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems) in 1975 as Director of Software. , and Gates follows him later in 1975 to form an informal partnership called Micro-soft, complete with hyphen.

So it's likely they just put Micro, and tacked on "Soft" for software after that, and decided that'll be the company name.

Long story short, Gates and some other guys wrote code (software) for what were considered micro computers at the time hence Microsoft.

Micro means looking at the tiniest of tiner parts. For doing this, one has to be soft.
