Uhmm... so ATC and other air traffic know the aircraft type, registration, position, altitude, intentions, and destination. Also to issue clearances, instructions, and emergency information.

VHF radio is the most common and is used for short distance two-way communication between aircraft and ground services.

HF radio is used for two-way communication long distances, like when the aircraft is over the Arctic or the oceans.

SATCOM gives closed two-way communication anywhere in the world.

Cellphones are useful in case of communication system failure.

The Emergency Locator Transmitter emits a signal on the emergengy VHF and UHF frequency to aid rescuers in finding a downed aircraft. They are often impact-activated.

The Transponder gives position and sometimes altitude information of an aircraft to Secondary Survelance Radar (used by ATC) so they can see them on the radar screen.

contained in the early days of avaiation there have been no radios, radar, dme, vor, ils or some thing of the alphabet soup of letters. They flew with each and each and every of the flamboyant stuff, the techniques are nonetheless there to allow pilots to land and take off without radios yet they don't need to bypass without their blankies. i replaced into speaking with 3 ATC sorts right now and they didn't want to artwork without radar. Comm structures enable denser packing of mind-set and departure and allow the tower, or floor to study with plane that are out of sight. shall we not even get into the enroute stuff.

one more additional "communication system." The hand signals we use with the rampers. Being flagged in, connecting external power, all that stuff. Its not a radio, but its communication.
