Ok, here is the hypothetical scenario... a guy has gone through all the movements, gotten her number, talked with her some, and planned a time to meet up with her. What is, the purpose, in her eyes, of this first date? Is it trying to see what a relationship would be like... to learn more about the person... to become friends... or all of the above? Just wondering because, it seems to me a lot of guys seem to think that basically it is where you simply start trying to get into a relationship.

For me, it was to see if we were compatible for a long term relationship. So I'd go out with him to find out more about him. If I go out on a first date with someone who I thought seemed nice (on the phone) and then I find myself "white knuckling" it through dinner because he just makes my skin crawl and I can't wait to go home, I won't go out with him again. On the other hand, if we go out and we just hit it off and have a GREAT time and feel comfortable together, it's a good sign that I'd hope he calls and we go out more often. Just go with the flow and see what happens. If you go out with her and find out she wants 10 kids and would like to be a stay at home mom, but you want no kids and prefer a career woman then there's your answer. She's not the one for you, but that doesn't mean the world is going to end. Someone will come along that goes on a first date with you who you've been waiting for - and it will just flow perfectly. You won't have to force it to work, but you CAN be friends (there's that "taboo" word... friends......)

To me a first date is getting to know that person and see if a friendship can develop, not a relationship. One date can't tell you that. Now if you've known the person for awhile (and your already friends) then decide to have a first date, you could be seeing if there a chance for a relationship.

a first date to alot of girls is good news for a guy, because we women wouldn't go out with someone on a first date if we weren't at least a little interested. A first date to a woman is basically to see if they can click with the guy one on one, & see what developes after that. The where do we go from here? If she isn't comfy on the first date, be prepared to be stuck in the friend zone. It is important to be yourself on the first date, & always, then she can't say that you have changed, & want to leave after a week. Relax, it isn't head games we are after, it is honest relationships that most of us want.

On a first date i dont even begin to think " ok where is this headed" I think its more about having fun and learning about the person. I like being friends first. If it becomes love than cool, but if not than cool as well. at least you have a new friend. I hate it when my friends go on a few dates and than they want 2 hound the guy with questions like " what would you call us?"

It is getting to know the guy better, seeing if a relationship with the guy would be harmful or beneficial, to see if there is a chance to start off as friends & see where it goes, to see if a relationship with the guy is even worth a darn, and to see if the guy is really how he presents himself to be.

To see if two are compatible. If you two are a good match the relationship progresses on it's own.
And it's a good excuse for us to wear cute shoes.

basically, women want to find out what type of perso you are. some women also take notes on your actions and responses to things. all you guys have to do is be yourself and be honest.
