Defective element.

It's probably nothing you did. I had one catch one time and it was a son of a gun to get out. Of course I turned the oven off, but it kept burning and burning almost like the metal burns away on a toy sparkler. Finally, it quit after several mintues. I never really felt threatened by the fire. It was just frustrating that it wouldn't go out and make quite a bit of smoke.

Hopefully it's new enough that a warranty would cover it. If not, the element shouldn't be super expensive. Consider contacting an appliance part warehouse rather than the original manufacturer. Even though you wouldn't think so, ou can often get OEM equipment for less through them.

Good luck.

Either the element was spattered with grease or oil, which then caught fire.

Or the element is damaged - the ceramic insulation which encapsulated the heating element wire is broken so the wire is overheating - and the element needs replacement.

The only reason an electric element would catch on fire is if something flammable dripped on it. Normally grease

if its new, I'd take it back. There should be a number to call. Thats not safe, it needs to get fixed before you use it again.
