If your microwave oven has a wire shelf, then it is most likely a combi oven, which has a convection oven and a microwave oven in one "box".
The reason why you shouldn't put metal objects in a microwave oven is that metal catches some of the microwave energy and converts it back into an electrical charge which can spark around.
The way the wire shelf is build (round) however, still does the same, but the charge "runs itself dead", hence no flying sparks.
But it takes a bit longer to warm up the food.
Better take the metal shelf out when using only microwave, and only use it for the convection oven function.

What do you think the walls of the cavity are made of? And the mesh screen on the door?

Any metal that you put in will tend to shield or shadow the food behind it - so it may contribute to uneven heating.

Also if the metal gets close to the sides it can create a spark.

If the metal dish etc. is insulated from the actual metal part of the microwave, it wont be affected, In fact if you want to heat a aluminium foil thing just wrap it in cloth or paper towel!!
