Hey There
To receive the "messy ,bed head look"
You want to go with a cut called "the ceasar"
It's usually" a clipper cut ,with a guard of a #2 or #3
You want your barber to leave about an inch in a half to two inches length left on top of the perimeter of your head.
If your hair texture is fine start out by using a volumizing mousse, one of my favourites is "Desighn Line"
Blow dry your hair ,get all the moisture out and play with your hair while doing so,run your fingers threw it,like scraching your head basicly, then to hold it all together ,use a pea size amount of styling glue,u dont need alot, then sculpt away .Use glue always on dry hair, gel is another story, you can usually put that in your hair wet and let it air dry.It results in a total different look though.
Most of my clients love the messy,Jude law look
I've been a Hairstylist for three years now and Barber cuts has always been one of my specialties and my favourites.
You can find good hair glue,by "spiker" or "ice"
Goes for about 10 to 15 bucks
Good Luck !! Kudos to your Barber ,but they are known to be very old school ,and usually give the same haircut to all their clients,it's important to be loyal to your hairstylist/Barber,but it's also important to expand your horizon and see what else there is to be offered to you,not one person cuts or styles hair the same,it really is an art,so yeah ,dont feel guilty, see what other stylists can offer you guaranteed you'll be surprised.

You could go to a salon (a barber might know this too) and say this: "I want a 90 degree cut all around." That means that you want the sexy, messy looking layers. Then you might want to use a hair product like Bed Head's "manipulator" or Modern Organic Products' pomade.

It can be, it just depends on the length of the hair. Most barbers and hairdressers will make your hair how you want it, you just have to explain what you want. Then just get some hair gel or wax to style it the way you want. It's not just how they style your hair at the salon it's how you'll style it every day. Just remember though to much product in your hair will make it look dirty and be harder to style it with. Less is best.

use a little hair gel. Or use some putty. Try the 'bed head' line of products. :)
