1. Take off the knob, and look at the back side. On the stem, you should see where the knob affixes to the rod coming out of the front of your stove. The hole should either be in a "D" or a star shape.
(if you have a star rod, which is on most MayTag models, you should call maytag, and order a new dialface.)
2. Look at the position of the flat end of the D. the flat end usually indicates the selection of the knob. the flat end should be looking up at the OFF position.
3. Most makers of convection ovens label thier setting dials in increments of 5, and in France, increments of 3 (for easier convenience in following recipies.) Put the knob back onto the rod and push until it is fully inserted.
4. Turn the knob approximately 1/2 inch. Wait approximately 20 minutes with the oven door closed. Using a thermometer (a candy thermometer works best.), measure the temperature inside the oven. You will have discovered your first 1/2 inch increment.
5. Using a silver pen, or a colored sharpie, write the degree over where the knob is selected. 1/2 inch should put you right at 150 F.
6. Measure each 1/2 inch rotation on the dial until you are back to the OFF position. Write increments of 150 on each 1/2 inch mark you just made. (i.e., 150, 300, 450, 600)
7. Now you can more accurately adjust the temperature. In the meantime, you should locate a dealer and ask about a dialface.
Hope this helps!

Being a renter have had that problem several times. I don't think there is such a thing as a universal knob due to different stem designs. A used appliance dealer might be able to match one up, cheaply. Or order a new one from a dealer that sells that brand of range. Once, i used an oven thermometer (on a cool day) and put it in the center of the center shelf. When the temp leveled off aqt 250, 350, 425 I marked each temp with a file mark on the knob. We only use a few settings so that worked for me.

i've just got an electric oven for the 1st time and it took some getting used to. on my oven the 'fan' symbol is only to warm the oven but a fan symbol enclosed in a square is for the actual fan oven. its probably best to have a look at the type of oven on the internet and see if you can get an instruction manual from the manufacturer or telling us which make of oven it is and hoping someone on here has the same. good luck.

Home Depot carries replactment knobs, or you might want to contact the manufacturer of the oven and see if you can get a replacement.....in the meantime, I suggest you spend 7 bucks and buy an oven thermometer and adjust your oven according to that, then using different color Magic Markers make lines on the old knob, and go by color coding.......This happened to me, and we had a joke about preheating the oven.......the Red line was 350F and the purple line was 375F etc........then I got a remodeled kitchen and said goodbye to that old oven......my new oven is digital, but I still keep an oven thermometer in it.......

you should be able to replace the knob, or you can set a thermometer in the oven, and after about 30 minutes, mark the temp on your dial

Depends on what type stove you have, but a lot of the replacement knobs can be bought at an appliance store. Some can even be bought at a department store like Wal-Mart or K-mart. I have even seen them in catalogs.
