It's made out of a more refined material than what we can see with our natural eyes. Say you consider the entire electromagnetic spectrum - visible light is only a fraction of that. A spirit is composed of something which includes light energy. When you obey God's commandments, the light energy increases in brightness. When you disobey God's commandments, the light energy diminishes. That is part of why the light in babies' eyes is usually very bright, because they are innocent and have not turned away from the source of all light. Here is another description of what a spirit is made of, from Doctrine & Covenants 131:7-8 recorded in 1843: "There is no such thing as immaterial matter. All spirit is matter, but it is more fine or pure, and can only be discerned by purer eyes; We cannot see it; but when our bodies are purified we shall see that it is all matter." A spirit is also made in the likeness of that person. So your spirit looks like you, only without the physical scars, blemishes, and any deformities we may encounter here on earth. It is eternal in nature and cannot be completely destroyed. Much of what you see in movies is a distorted version of what spirits are really like - try going back to movies made in the 1950s or earlier - some of them get it right (not scary movies, but ones which are more of dramas.)
The second part of your question - what is the function of the spirit? The spirit is what quickens our brain and body - it is what makes us move and think and learn and grow. The spirit is necessary to have a feeling of joy, and the combination of the body and spirit in its perfect form are necessary to have a fulness of joy (Doctrine & Covenants 93:33). I have seen a couple of other answerers say that upon death, there is a loss of something. I once heard that someone tried to measure the weight of the spirit of someone who was about to die, and it came out to something like 3 ounces (difference between weight before death and after death). However, that was something I heard 15 or 20 years ago and can't remember the source. So it's back to faith for most of us. Have a happy day.

Physical comprehends physical, and spiritual comprehends spiritual. You seem to want an explanation of something spiritual in physical terms which is impossible, but I will take a shot at an explanation nonetheless. Try to introspect for a moment. Your mental activity right now consists of chemical reactions and electrical firings of nerve cells. One could say that this is what composes our thoughts. In this case the physical gives rise to the intangible, our sentient conscious state. On the other hand, the argument could be made that this consciousness, or sentience if you will (self-awareness), is what's independent of the brain. The brain is merely the equipment that houses the soul and enables it have to have physical expression. To the unspiritual man this is nonsense of course. I apologize because it doesn't really answer your question of what its made of, but only whether its really there or not. I personally can't conceive of how purely physical reactions could account for "me". I can see how it could cause a being to act and react like a sentient being without actually being self-aware internally. But to actually be "me", and be inside of "me" and know that "I am", there has to be a soul, something beyond the physical.

It's that inner part of us that hears the voice of God. What is it actually made of? To be honest I don't know.
However, upon death it leaves the body. In fact medical science has recorded that upon a persons death there is a sudden although small weight loss. To be honest I don't know.
Is it pure, probably not unless Jesus has been accepted as Lord and Saviour.

We are all spirits. Some are dead, some are alive. A soul is the dust of the earth combined with the breath of life. We are born spiritually dead, but when we have the new birth from God, our spirit comes alive. Spirit is a dimension of thought.

It's a wind. It blows where it wants to go and on whom it wants to blow.
It's function is that it is God's spirit given to man because he can
be anywhere anytime, in millions of people at the same time.
Before, he walked with man, and they heard his voice on the outside, not on the inside.
Now through the Holy Ghost he can live inside of man and speak to his innermost being.
