About fifty years after Jesus rose into heave, the Christians began to do what man always do, disagree, make up their own rules and so on.
In this case, some Christians said that Jesus was just a prophet, others held to the belief that Jesus was GOD, come down from heaven, while the remainder of the original 12 said Christ has both a human nature and GOD nature.
At the same time, many of other peoples were joining the Christians, but continued to worship Sun Gods and so forth.
There existed these two major issues.
To resolve it once and for all, the church established the celebration of Christs birth to support his two natures, Human and God. After all, birthday means you were born.
To solve the other issue, the date was coincided with the celebrations of others so that, if they were going to celebrate, they would in reality celebrate Christs birthday along with the church.
The actions of Arch Bishop Klaus added to what we now do in the celebration of Christmas. He devoted much time helping the poor and bringing gifts to help the families. His formal dress was red. Put that together with the gifts of the three wise men and you have the whole picture.
Some people take issue with the date without the whole history,
more important, we celebrate Christ coming into the world at Christmas. Nothing else matters. Too, the calendar has been changed three time since Christ walked the earth.
If any of you have any REAL intrest in this these issues, why not go to the public library and do some history home work.
Already, in this forum, members have made statements that history does not support or they just repeated what they have heard with out bothering to verify their position.

Christmas is recognised as the birthday of Jesus, however he was born around March, The Christmas was a Roman Holiday, and that is Fact, so I suppose you could say that the Romans invented this one, but was then made as the birthday of Christ

I copied this:
Moderator - In ancient times the winter solstice was celebrated in Babylon as the birth day of Tammuz, the god of vegetation. According to the pagans, the god Nimrod would visit the evergreen tree and leave gifts upon it. This festival became known as the Saturnalia, and friends and family would exchange gifts. Jeremiah 10:2-4 "Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven, for the heathen are dismayed at them (horoscopes?). For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not."
So, looks to me like the Christmas tree was a heathen idol. Bummer! They are lovely to look at but we should be looking at CHRIST OUR REDEEMER WHO DIED ON THE OLD RUGGED TREE! Hey, I've learned something!

. Type origin of christmas in the search line and get a lot of info. Christmas is not Jesus Birthday. It is a pagan holiday that the catholic church started to satisfy the people. Jesus was not born in December. JESUS GAVE DID NOT EVER SAY THAT WE SHOULD CELEBRATE HIS BIRTHDAY. HE GAVE US FEAST THAT WE SHOULD OBSERVE BUT MOST OF US DO NOT DO SO, MOST OF US DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THE FEAST DAYS WERE.----READ YOUR BIBLE.----while we're at it Easter has nothing to do with the resurrection either.
I AM A BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN AND I DO ENJOY THE CHRISTMAS SEASON AS A TIME WITH MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
IF THE TRUTH OFFENDS YOU I AM REALLY SORRY. THE BIBLE SAYS THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE.
MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY.

Fireball's answer is correct. Although I'm not christian, I cringe everytime someone answers sophomorically with the 'the christians stole a pagan holiday' answer when it comes to christmas. Arrgggh!! ALL religions, when they spread, integrate the culture's existing symbols, holidays, and concepts into the new religion's teachings, presenting the teachings of the new religion in the context of familiar but reintepreted elements.

Early on in Christian history, a lot of effort was being put in to converting western Europe. It was decided sometime in the third century to coincide the major Christian festivals with Pagan ones in order to make it easier to convert people. The festival celebrating Jesus' birth was placed at the same time as the Pagan festival of Yule, and the Resurrection with the festival of Ostara.

Satan. To distract you from Christ. Christmas really is a pagan holiday built around the worship of the sun.
