You really have to define "boring" versus "exciting" versus "dream room".

You probably really don't want an "exciting" room because it will then be too exciting to actually get any rest and relaxation in the room.

Browse thru HGTV.com and look at some of the old Trading Spaces shows on TLC.

Generally, the best steps are simple ones:

1) Take everything out of the room and clean the empty room thoroughly (ceiling to floor - don't forget light fixtures and windows).

2) Repair any problems in the room (holes in walls, carpet that needs restreching, etc). Repaint, if necessary or desired, in the color(s) of your choice (don't foget the ceiling).

3) Only put back things in the room that you truly love, use or need. If you need a bed and don't like the one you have right now and can afford a new one, then don't put the old one back and go out and get a new one that you love. Ditto for everything else.

4) Don't overfill your room with a bunch of clutter. Less is MORE, BIGGER is BETTER! Instead of several little things, use ONE big thing as a focal point for the room.

5) Limit yourself to about three predominant colors in the room, that are 'in sync' with each other.

start out with 3 or 4 of your favorite colors that go well together. Use paint card samples in the paint stores or Walmart to do this. You can take the paint cards home with you for free. I like to use a bed-in-a-bag which contains the coverlet, bedskirt, shams, and sheet set. These are often less expensive than a set of sheets alone! Then look for curtains to coordinate with the bed. Stay in the 3 or 4 colors to keep it all tied together. Look for art to hang on walls. Floating shelves and cube shelves look good. Let your artistic side shine.
