Apathy is the lack of emotion, motivation, or enthusiasm. Apathy is a psychological term for a state of indifference — where an individual is unresponsive or "indifferent" to aspects of emotional, social, or physical life. Clinical apathy is considered to be at an elevated level, while a moderate level might be considered depression, and an extreme level could be diagnosed as a dissociative disorder. The physical aspect of apathy associated with physical deterioration, muscle loss, and lack of energy is called lethargy — which has many pathological causes as well.
Apathy can be object-specific — toward a person, activity or environment. It is a common reaction to stress where it manifests as "learned helplessness" and is commonly associated with depression. It can also reflect a non-pathological lack of interest in things one does not consider important. This is the definition to Apathy!

Americans have multiple choices in everything from cars to cucumbers. The only place where we have no real choice is in the voting booth. That's because the Republican and Democrat parties have had a corrupt stranglehold on our political system for over 150 years. The 'Republicrats' decide who the candidates will be, and shake things up just enough to make people believe they actually had something to do with it.
It's time for new, fresh independent political parties dedicated to the people to destroy the 'Republicrats'. It's time for a second American Revolution.
Americans don't vote because they prefer not to vote for the lesser of two evils. 'Republicrats' deliberately make the process difficult, cumbersome and inconvenient because the fewer people that vote gives them a better chance at getting re-elected. The whole system is rigged. -RKO-

Of course, it's going to be different for different people. Apathy is one. A sense of helplessness is another, in that many don't believe their vote will count.
Others have no faith in the integrity of the system. If it's not hanging chads, it's a voting machine conspiracy, or stuffing ballot boxes, miscounts, lost ballots, or whatever else.
Another reason is that many believe that there is no real choice. Voting between the dems and repubs is an academic decision at best. they're both in the pockets of the same groups, the same lobbyists contribute to both parties, and the distinctions between a conservative and a liberal are minor compared to the similarities. This is especially true in times when both parties are moving to the center.

Apathy is part of it, but there is a long list of reasons. Too old and can't get to polls; strung out on drugs and don't even know that the elections are taking place; don't see differences in candidates so why vote. I think one state even offered a lottery ticket to anyone who showed up at polls. You are always going to have folks who can vote not vote. It is just like everything else there will always be a % who don't respond.

My vote gained't count number. If i bypass hostile to the electoral college, then my vote receives solid to the aspect. And, when you consider that there hasn't been a want for the accepted vote for various years, I doubt that my unmarried vote would count number. And! My well-liked of all is i'm not politically minded so i could not care a lot less about political stuff. i keep in mind that is heresy to some human beings. I propose, there are some subject matters that i think passionately about yet i'm not fervent adequate to pursue them. If it without delay impacts me, then i'd replace my track. when you consider that i think this way, i'm not registered. (so as that covers base 2). And, style 3, i'm not attentive to political subject matters or the candidtates through selection not through lack of understand-how. i think that there are different issues in this life i will without delay replace, so i bypass after those. reliable good fortune inclusive of your essay.

Democrats have to take off work and lose pay to vote or go after work. Republicans vote while being paid to work. Mostly they vote during working hours.
The turnout for the 18-30 year old age group was way up. Almost 60 percent voted for Democrats in that group. I would support making that a National Holiday with pay.

Apathy, people do not think that their vote counts. I have been voting in every presidential and congressional election since 1968 and many have not went the way I wanted them to go, however it didn't stop me and it shouldn't stop anybody. Some people just don't care because they feel that it don't make any difference who gets elected, to them all politicians are liars and there is no difference.

Mostly apathy. I will be honest with you, I voted, but in all truth, it wouldn't matter. We have taxation without representation. I've written to all of my rep.s both democrat and republican alike. Every one of them passed the buck and said they couldn't help me. But then, miraculously, just before the election, the democrat called and offered to try and help. I was asking for legislation and was instead given lip service. Talk is cheap. All we can do is try and minimize the amount of damage the professional politicians are going to do. So, vote for the lesser of two evils. REALLY, is all the better we can do?

I have always considered non-voters as providing an affirmative vote for the winning side. So when thse people start whining about the election results, its really their "vote" of non-participation that resulted in the outcome.

I believe people are just plain lazy. We have had it too easy in our lives compared to other countries. Too much is handed to kids without working for them. Lack of respect
History and Civics/Government are not taught as extensively as they used to be. Students have too many brainless subjects and not enough of the basics.
