They can. Read Helen Gurley Brown's classic, SEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL.
And the stigma hasn't been around "since the beginning of time," as one poster suggested. It's a result of the dominant, repressive patriarchal culture. Way back in the days when people believed primarily in a goddess, a woman "giving herself as she chooses" wasn't seen as wrong at all. This doesn't mean there were no problems or that choice was universally respected, though.

Who said we can't have one night stands!!!! WE can do what ever we want and with whom ever we choose.......F**K society and everyone else who doesn't agree with your choices. We only go around once in this world, and when I'm an old lady sitting in my rocking chair I'm not going to have any regrets saying should've, could've, would've. I'l be saying been there, done that, conquered, and not only satisfied myself but them as well

This is a typical case of "you can't have your cake and eat it too". You have to choose between doing what you want and living your life according to the opinions of others.
If you choose to do what you want (incl. having one-night stands), you have to be woman enough to stop caring what other people think.

They can and they do. Society's standards label us as tramps and whores while the guy is said to be "the man".Can you live with what you do? That is the question wether male or female.
