I just got a 92 Volvo 940 GL, I can't get it to start. When it was dropped off a year ago the guy drove it in. We went to put it on the road since my car killed over and it's dead. The battery was completly dead in it. I replaced the plug and wires and filled the tank. I think that it might have a factory anti-theft that kicked in when the battery died. It will roll over and sound like it's gonna start. I sprayed some started fluid and got it to kick over twice for a cpl secs then it died again. There is a light flashing on the radio panel which is why I thought maybe the factory anti-theft.

Check your fuel pump relay under the hood and fuses behind the ashtray first. Check the manual and it will tell you how to get to the fuses. Does the fuel pump work? You will need to get an oil change once this fuel delivery problem (thats what I think it is) is taken care of.
The radio needs a 4 digit code to work, that's why it's flashing.

If the car has been sitting around for a year without being started, it's no wonder you are having problems! This could be any one thing, or multiple causes. The flashing light on the radio is only for the radio anti-theft; nothing to do with the car not starting.

If you got it to run for a couple of seconds with starter fluid, then you have spark, so it sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Unless you have the expertise to start playing with the fuel system, you should find a mechanic experienced with Volvos.

the fact that it kicked over on starting fluid tells me that the ignition is OK and you have a fuel problem most likely the fuel pump. this car used a single in tank pump. don't forget to replace the fuel filter and the pump relay[ relay located in the fuse panel remove ash tray and fuse cover then lighter element and trim surround left side screw is angled to left at 40 degree angle now pullout and down on cubby and it will come out leave hanging on lighter wires pump relay is white in color rectangular shaped on left side of panel and has 6 pins in 2 rows of three. .
i recommend relay first and smack bottom of tank to try to get pump turning if it starts it will save you a tow if you drive directly to your trusted mechanic for pump / filter replacement. NOTE no factory theft system on 92 only anti- theft coded radio if code is lost remove radio and take down model and serial numbers volvo will provide the code with proof of ownership.

i own a repair shop, and i think it may have something to do with the theft system on it,i had one once that i changed the battery in,and it wouldn't start back,i had to remove the fuse for the anti theft system on it,and re-install it,and it started right up,Volvo,s can be tricky, but they do have a good theft system on them,,as you can see,,but try removing the fuse for it,and putting it back in again.this somehow re-sets it,and it may start ,if not check it to see if its getting any fire,it may have a dead module on it from setting,,good luck,i hope this help,s..and have a good thanksgiving.

take it to a mechanic...they should be able to reset the anti-theft thing...that is what it sounds like, i mean it's a volvo, they don't have actual problems.
