my gf has it and you can lead a very productive life with it shes a mother of 2 boys and she is an intensive care nurse the medications you would haveto take if diagnose d with it would depend on if you are suffering from anything else besides the bdp and to thins point it hasnt been linked genetically and your primary doctor isnt qualified to diagnose you with this type of disorder you would have to be diagnosed by a accredited therspist or psychiatric professional

I have a friend who is borderline personality disorder. You were given this diagnoses because you display two or more different types of personality disorder. It is often cause by a bad childhood and that is sometimes brought about by having one or more parents who are mentally ill themselves so yes in that way it is genetic. My friend is on disability. So yeas to your question about SSI. Your Dr.(Psychiatrist) will know what medication to place you on.
You may be able to work, it isn't easy living on a small amount of money such as with SSI.

I have it in addition to bipolar and several other psych issues. It took a VERY long time, but I finally do get SSI.

Medication does not really address the core of bpd specifically, although it may be used to treat some specific symptoms and any co-occurring biologically based disorder like depression should be treated. The best treatment for it, in my opinion, is something called DBT.

It is extremely common to have overlapping psychiatric disorders.
