It's simple. If you're downloading music that you don't have the right to have, then it's illegal. Period. End of story.

You can legally have the right to download a song if...

a) you have paid the stated purchase price of the song through a service such as iTunes.

b) you live in a country (such as Canada) that levies taxes in assumption that media piracy is taking place and pays those taxes to the entertainment industry, therefore making downloading (not distributing, which you do through limewire) legal.

c) the song that you're downloading (and the performance thereof) is old enough that the rights to it have passed into the public domain.

So let's sum up - if you aren't using iTunes, don't live in Canada *and* have your limewire set to download and not upload, or are only downloading classical music performances from decades ago, then yes - what you're doing is illegal.

A car is Legal. But when used as a weapon it becomes illegal.

It all boils down to what you do with it. Limewire is peer to peer networking - Hence Legal

However when I send you software and music that you didn't purchase it becomes illegal

The programme itself is legal, there is no law against the software, but what it's used for ( downloading copyrighted material such as songs, books, programmes etc.) is illegal. I try to look at it in the video recorder kinda light, if you weren't meant to use the machines to record your favourite shows, why the hell let them market and distribute the technology?!

most software is legal, it's what you do with it that makes it illegal. file sharing or p2p programs are iffy at best. the site you mentioned is ok.
