Okay, I'm not a Christian, but I think I can answer this.
The fish is called "ichthus," (pronounced ick-thoos) which is simply Latin for "fish."
It comes from a passage in the gospel (it appears in several books) in which after being tempted by Satan in the dessert, Jesus encounters Peter and his brother Andrew fishing in the sea of Galillee. They aren't catching any fish, and have given up when Jesus instructs them to throw their nets once again into the sea. The reluctantly do so, and pull their nets up to find them completely full of fish, almost to the point of breaking.
Jesus then says "follow me, and I will make you fishers of men," and they become his first disciples.
The passage is often cited by Christians as a call to evangelism.
In ancient tradition, during the time of Christian persecution under the Roman empire, a Christian would draw a curved line, half of the ichthus symbol. Another Christian, upon seeing it, would complete it, and it would lift the spirits of other Christians who saw it.
Now it's mainly used as a bumper decal for protestant denominations of Christianity, and it means "look at me, I'm a Christian."
There is a similar bumper decal used to poke fun at the ichthus symbol in which the fish has feet, and the name "Darwin" is printed inside it. It is a reference to the first amphibious creature crawling onto land and eventually evolving into humankind. Y'know, evolution vs. intelligent design.

Legend says but cant be proven by scripture that when They brought to Jesus a woman that was caught in the very act of Adultery he said not a word but drew something on the ground and it was the symbol of the fish , Another legend says that because Christians were being persecuted after the Resurrection and if two believers meet and knew not that the other was a believer ,one would take his foot and make a line in the sand ,If the other knew what he meant he would take his foot and draw a line in the sand from the beginning of the first line but cross it at the end ,signifying a fish

The Jesus fish came first.
The Darwin fish is an alternative to the Jesus fish. It shows which side of the argument you're on -- creationism or evolution.
Putting Jesus on the back of your car is the same as putting a Metallica sticker or whatever else. It shows that you support this idea over that one. Also, cops may have a harder time issuing a ticket to a Jesus guy. Maybe they're playing the odds...

It's a symbol for Christianity. It means we're Christians. A reminder to us as well as others. Sometimes you'll see the Greek letters inside the fish rather than Jesus. The 5 letters are the first letters of the Greek words that mean 'Jesus Christ God's Son Savior'

Well Jesus has given Christians the call of duty to go and tell people about the word of God. Many times in the Bible he would compare evangelizing to fishing. Jesus said," Be fishers of me" we need to fish for the lost people, that doesn't mean through them in the ocean and pull them back up with a fishing rod. It means that we should look for the lost and try to save them. Be Blessed!

Jesus Fish people may or may not be the worse drivers... though I've seen some like you describe. However,I have been nearly killed by people who have stickers like "Support our Troops", "God Bless America", "Canada for Canadians", "My Son's an Honour Student", Vote Richardson for Class President" and so on. Let's all be courteous to each other on the road.

seen it on the history channell, back in bibliacal times , back when christiananity first starting in other country it wasnt a popular relegion, so you had to be cautious who you talked to about your relegion, people would turn in and youd die a bad death. so they devised a way to tell one from, what theyed do is draw half the fish symbol(with a there foot or a stick in the ground) and if he was christian he'd draw out the rest of the symbol (fish symbol ,symbolized fishers of men in the bible so they used a fish symbol)
