Most of us used to be christians and became atheists after studying the bible. Like the quote by Mark Twain, "Nothing makes an atheist faster than a thorough reading of the bible."

Personally, I came to my atheism while studying the greek texts in bible college (and it was the LAST thing I expected to happen). To me, knowing god was THE most important thing. So I threw myself into it with all my heart and mind. Since it was so important to me, I wasn't going to reject it easily either. So I studied very hard to make SURE I was right before rejecting it.

Hope that helps you understand. I don't think we're necessarily "smart" but that we've given a great deal of our mind and time to this important issue.

Firstly don't think about smart or stupid, as the matter of fact. Smart only on the standpoint of the advance of oneself and there will be another disadvance happenning as well. Let's kick out of superinsitution. If you want to go into a religious, should go into to understand what is the point of the religious telling and what was the situation there when the hollyman telling this issue. The more you understand and the more you feel inocent.

The Bible (and the Koran, and the Torah et.al.) are fascinating pieces of literature, and of some use in historical research. It depends entirely on who you believe is the original author of the work, but anyone not of the relevant faith who dismisses a holy book out of hand because the don't believe the religious messages that others see, is missing out on texts that are both interesting and important to our world's history and culture.

We do actually read it. At least, I have, several times. I don't know why this is so incomprehensible to people, because many of us actually came to atheism through the bible and/or the Christian religion. Hey, it's a great read - magic, talking animals and bushes, dragons, all those rules in Leviticus and Dueteronomy - it really is the best STORY ever told. It's just a really really long story.

If one did their research, they would find the bible to be historically, geographically, archaeologically accurate with a ton of scientific proof that God exists and would cease to be an athiest. Ok, my life story but anyway...

It shows that people didn't take their position lightly and instead did some research and investigation.

We're really smart.

We also honor critical thinking over blind obedience.
