Someone asked me a very good question once. Maybe this will help you. Would you rather become a famous artist or a great artist?
You can be famous for your work, but that doesn't mean anyone will think it's good.

I am a self-taught artist with an art page at hellosanantonio.com under the name Guerro, and in response to your question, what i would like to say is that most artist don't go into art to become famous. They go into it because they love it, with the main goal to create the best work they can. Many famous artist achieved that status because their work has endured the test of time. While still living, artist can consider themselves fortunate enough to have their work admired, accepted, and in demand. A more humble and realistically attainable status an artist is more likely to achieve, is that as a renown artist. Don't preoccupy yourself with the added stress of seeking fame, follow your heart and mind and strive to be the best artist you can be.

First of all - is your work marketable or is it "Francis Bacon" (Artist not the writer). Frank Auerbach is famous but his work is not necessarily marketable (just yet). Have an exhibition at least once a year. Advice about exhibiting in hospitals etc. good advice. Include banks and any other commercial business. Enter art prizes and competitions relevant to your style, don't just enter competition for the sake of it - be selective

I am an artist also, in oil paintings. I am not famous, but would also like to become noticed. I have been told to attend as many art exhibitions for other people as you can, get to know people in the field. Show your own work in exhibitions at areas in your town. Some places will show your art for free, like in hospitals, doctors offices, restaurants, art supply stores, etc. It gets your art 'out there' and you can get an idea of how well it is accepted and what it is actually 'worth'. There is most likely a market for your type of art 'somewhere'. I am just starting out on trying to get noticed myself, and am doing these things, too. Good luck to you.

A) Die. Rough, and not recommended, but it worked for many great artist.
B) Lob off an ear. Then mail it to someone.
C) Be as weird as humanly possible, like the guy that covered the hotel room in cheese...
D) Lob off the other ear and mail it to the first one.
E) (previously mentioned) Donate them to a public place that likes artful things. Hospitals, Schools, Cafes, Coffee Shops, ect. Coffee shops and such love artful stuff. Usually the weirder the better.
F) Hang your art everywhere. Force people to look at it. In busses, on mailboxes, restraunts. Give it a nice frame and sneek it in to the restraunt. It may stay a while if no one realizes that it shouldnt be there.
I reccomend option E. Or F.

the way you become famopuse is by not making art to become famous. that is the only way you can make good art.
and also if you want to be famouse, than I really wonder why do you make art?
In any case, contacting galleries and having exhibitions might be helpfull.
good luck.

1. if you consider yourself as an artist, you'll never be an artist.
2. real artists become famous only once they're dead (and buried).
3. prostitution, and i mean, both intellectual and physical prostitution might be the answer. :)
