I'm looking to use it while driving, and would like it to have live traffic updates. I've got an off brand phone, that's not on tomtom's list. but I do got a Laptop running xp pro, and has a moble internet connection. plus battery life not an issue as I got an invertor in the car to power it. I was thinking I could buy a reciver and map software but all the ones I found seem to be lacking in traffic updates, I can't even get it as an add on, or premium service. is there any programs out there that do this? if not what the cheepest console gps that does it all?

Btw, if anyone replys to this message simply telling me I need to learn how to spell I will report you. if your going to razz me on my spelling at least also say something useful!

For what you're looking for, I think the Garmin Nuvi line is your best choice. I'm a big fan of Garmin GPS units in general- they have the best interface. I haven't played with the Nuvi yet, but my parents are planning on getting one soon, so I researched it a bit and they seem like a great unit. They tried the Microsoft GPS unit that plugged into a laptop and were very disappointed- OS stability issues, viewing angle issues, where to put the laptop, etc...

I have a BMW Navigator II, Garmin eTrex Legend, GPS IV, and a really old Garmin unit that I can't remember. I also teach a GPS workshop (although it's focused on handheld units for hiking and exploring) at the local community college, so I have had the opportunity to play with a lot of different models and brands. The Magellan units are pretty nice, but the user interface is not as easy to use as the Garmins. I would advise to stay away from the other brands, not because of quality, only because their user interfaces really stink.

Good luck finding what you need.

we'll we all make mistakes.. but thats not what im here for..

well it depends on where you live and where you travel to.. i have a Garmin Nuvi 360 (amazon has it for >$600) and it has or could have the ability to get live traffic updates via an add on attenna.. but it has limited range or service.. best bet is to go to the manufacturers websits and check where they provide the traffic update services..

cheap ones usually lack alot of features the costly one has.. for $100 or so more than the Nuvi 350.. i could get bluetooth functionality to sync/pair my phone to make calls.. SD Slot for pictures/music..

I think you can get the GPS you want, or you can get a cheap GPS but not both.
