If you know the history well, you wouldn't say U.S lost to V.N, you need to look at the bigger picture during that era. I want to say that the U.S has not lost a war, yet.

The U.S abandoned South Vietnam to allie with China against the U.S.S.R during the Cold War.

Logically speaking... how can can the U.S lost to a third world country back in the day...when in the past the U.S has defeated Germany, Italy and Japan, and many other countries? It's rediculous to say that U.S lost to VN.

despite what most people belife we lost the War of 1812. Basicly the U.S Invaded British North America, then we were pushed back in to our lands. Once the war started British troops invaded the United States and burned and destroyed every thing. But they were under orders not to hold land. We were able to end the war by kissing up to the Brithish> So i would put that in the lost colum.
A comminly over looked one is the Russian Cilvar War. The took place after The Great War. The Allies and loylist russsians fought agenst the communist rebels. We withdrew troups due to great petion back home. One year later the Loyalist russians suurenderd to the commuist. So that take us to 2 losses. Korea is not lost because it is still going on. We are winning that one significltly if you cant tell. Vietnam was a lost because the Communist took over the whole country, which is why we fought there to begain with. So thats 3 loses. If you want to get technical we can count the first Barbary war. That was when we fought some independent African countrys because of there harboring of pirates. We payed them 50,000 dollars to stop the war and to stop the prite harboring. This of course did not work because there was a secound Barberay war about 10 years later. Below is a link with more info. So that puts us at 4 loss wars. But keep in mind 3 out of the 4 wars had no real effect on America.

To me a war is any kind of confrontation between two groups -- armed confrontation or non-armed confrontation; i.e.: the cold war was a non-armed conflict and for those that think a police action is not a war -- its only semantics; if it sounds, smells and looks like it then it is.

I do not get it? Why we fail mention the two defeats in the little banana republic of Nicaragua, in 1912-1925 and 1926-1933 both time the US Marines were repelled, kick out. I believe that there are stories that when the Nicaragua opposing forces captured US Marine soldier the head was cut-off and send back in a basket.
The USA withdrew, abandon the conflicts --I understand that when decisions are made they are after a series of events and set of reasons. When you abandon something you have fail to obtain whatever you were after.

Perhaps, USA defeats in Nicaragua has been three times – well, the support of the Contras in the 80s was not a direct involvement. I guess that training, lots of cash and political fiasco is not direct involvement; however Ortega is still there. Comes to mind it has been four times; oh, oh, wait a minute William Walker 1824-1860 were a private military expedition – filibustering. Never the less it was an enterprise by USA citizens and William Walker was executed.

Do you mean on the battlefield or in the press?
Politically I would say Korea is a tie and Viet Nam was a loss at the time, but what do you call a loss?

Even the American Civil War is debatable. Everyone says the South lost, which is true if you consider Lee's surrender, but twice as many from the North died in that war than in the South (look it up), so unless you go by decisive victories where the losing country has an entire regime change or is erased from the map, victories can be debated.

Also remember that the Korean War never technically ended. There was no peace treaty, just a ceasefire. We've still got 40,000 troops on the Demilitarized zone, the most heavily fortified area in the world, by the way, and North Korea still sends paramilitary raids into South Korea every now and again.

lots...

lost vietnam to 2 AK-47's, a cow & 6 farmers;

lost Iraq to 3 tanks, 2 farmers and a goat;

lost 1812 to 7 farmers with flint rifles, a cow & an amish;

lost korea to 3 farmers & a russian jet;

lost afghanistan to 3 goats, 2 sheep, 1 pig, 3 farmers & caves...

I suggest you look it up in historical websites and redefine your question to what sort of defeats: simple engagements, or actual entire campaigns, because like any army the US Army has been outrightly defeated in some engagements, but not in an entire war(on the battlefield)...

So you could class these following as losses because of the broadness of your question:

* Bay of Pigs Invasion;
* Korea
* Vietnam
* Afghanistan
* Iraq

Wars that they pulled out of which they technically lost (& that's why I ask you redefine your question as it's too broad & open for interpretation) because they did not achieve their set goal(so it can be considered a loss).

Analysts can tell you that Iraq could be considered a success if they simply declared victory when finding Saddam and got out.

Also any of their modern wars could have simply been won with nuclear weapons or mass invasion etc etc.
**********************************************************************
Simply the USA military cannot be defeated categorically in a war simply due to the fact that it has more resources to wage war.
It's military budget is unmatched and therefore they train better and they have state of the art weaponary(mostly)...and have a reach around the world...nothing to do with pride or anything like that(sometimes yes), but mostly because of their capcity to wage war & that means ability to fund the military...and this is simply unmatched...

Sean S,
The military has never lost a war, but the politicians have lost a several. By the way Vietnam and Korea were not wars they were called conflicts.

The War of 1812. That's why Canada is a separate country and not the 51st state. Canucks 1, Yankees 0.

0 none If you read back Vietnam was never declared a war it was a Police action.And we were not defeated we were told by our President to pull out,and the war we are in today will be the same the president who ever it is at the time will pull us out.This will mean that all the people that died or got wounded will be for nothing.And if this happens we want loose it either it will be the president the commander and chief he will loose it by him or her self.
