I used to believe until June 2006 too. Now I'm an atheist. Because I gave it thought, I actually sat on my bed and started thinking about this whole "god" thing and to tell the truth, it doesn't make any sense. Read this:

Talk to God about this, read the Bible if you haven't already. You should even read other religious texts, I feel. I grew up very angry towards God, because home was a mess and life seemed so unfair. When I got older I felt a need for God, and I can't quite explain that feeling in words. But I started studying religious books and going to different places of worship. I think eventually there comes a time when we all have to make peace with what we believe, and it seems now is your time to do that. Religion is a very personal decision. When you find your place, it will feel like home to you.

I believe in God. I know He's real because I know what He has done in my life. And creation bears witness of Him. It couldn't just happen by chance.
Please don't confuse God with religion. Do you know the Bible says that God hates religion? People often use that word to mean spirituality, or going to church. But what it really means is working to be good enough. You can never be good enough in front of an Almighty God. Only through His son Jesus can we approach him.
So you're right- some of it's fake. But don't blame God for that.
Why since June, 2006? Did something happen then to cause you to doubt God?

Not a believer, but thought I'd comment...
Really, you don't have to be part of an organized religion and label yourself. Many people just consider and call themselves Spiritual and believe what their instinct tells them is right for them.
Deciding to become atheist is a big change if you grew up a believer and did believe. And since you have only claimed that title since June and now have doubts about that choice, then it's probably not for you. I would suggest consider being agnostic or simply 'spiritual' if you find you do believe in a god.

I have a win win scenario:
Ask God for guidance with all your heart and sincerity.
If you are not guided then you know that there is no God, if you are, then you will find the religion that will answer you questions and grant you peace.
Here is a link of the World's Religions. Its very short and sweet.
And the website is not owned by a special interest religious group or organization. It will probably take you about 3 minutes to read.

I'm in a religion that answers all my questions and gives me a clear view on all over religions. Best Wishes, I will pray for your guidance.

Other than having grown up in church, I beleive based on researching both my religion and others to see what keeps them all going, and witch one has the most credibility. A couple good books for someone to read would be "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel. That book is from a man who is an athiest like yourself, and he sets out to disprove the Bible and through his research becomes a believer. After the research he writes this book. Another book would be "I Don't Have Enough Faith to be an Athiest" also a very good book on the breaking down of the religions.
Good luck on your research, I hope you'll consider reading one of these books. I can't give you what they could.
God Bless

i used to believe in a personified god because that's what i was born into but finally i had to admit that there were too many inconsistencies in religion and most of it doesn't make sense. if god is all powerful and infallible, why would "he" create such flawed beings and then blame and punish them for being flawed? does that make sense to u?
and why did he send his law in the form of holy books when words have different meaning for each individual? also, any holy books i've read have been translated from their "original" language. everyone knows that things get lost in translation so how can u put so much faith in books that could have been tampered with over thousands of years? if god is all knowing, wouldn't he know this?
i believe (and u don't have to agree with me on this) that god is not a lordly guy dealing out rewards and punishments. i believe god is the source where all things spring from. i believe god is everything, in everything, of everything. i believe god is the purest form of love and there is no room in love for fear, judgement and petty "worship me or i will smite thee" stuff. i believe we are all divine and we come here, to Earth, to realise our divinity.
when u do decide, make sure it's not something u've convinced urself into believing. it should already be there in ur heart, patiently waiting for u to notice it.

God didn't just set us down and say "Believe or else". He gave us reason for faith.. Proof no. We are saved by faith if we had absolute proof faith would no longer be necessary and therefore no one could receive salvation. But God put His stamp on life it's self. There is a scientific principle called Chirality that prevents life from being spontaneously generated. Then there is prophesy like Palms 22 that predicts the Crucifixion of Jesus right down to the dividing of His cloths. That prophesy was made 900 years before Jesus was born... There are reasons and if you really want to learn more we could talk more about it.... Jim

I believe there is a God, but I also think that some of it is fake, just made up to teach us a lesson.
I believe in a God because I think that our existence is way too much a coincidence. I don't think that we were just a random equation. Even if we were, something had to put it into motion...

Because I saw the difference He made is so many peoples lives, I looked into it deeper and found out for myself how my life could be so much better.
But you do need faith, I don't have a lot of faith, but Jesus says all you need is enough the size of a mustard seed and you can move mountains through Christ.
Pray a lot and study the Bible with an open mind. Talk to other Christians on how their lives have changed since they accepted Christ into their hearts.
