I have a registered female who is a few months shy of 2yrs old. When she had her first heat cycle she accidently got out of the fenced yard and i caught the stray in are yard mating with her in a lock. Well thank goodness she didnt take.
But now she is of age and i want to breed her to another registered dog with CH bloodlines. I have did all the homework and etc.. know and ups and downs and the possiblilty of loosing her during whelping or c section. But she i due for her heat (well over due) Im worried that she didnt take on her first heat with the stray she got locked with that she might not take if i bred her. Was this just because of her first heat? Or once a dog doesnt take on her first heat she is just not fertile?

To clear things up she was 9 months old when she came into her first heat. This would be her second heat, which is is over due by a month. I know a lady who breeds the same kind of dogs and her dogs come into heat once every 6 months and her dogs didnt have there first heat untell they were over a year old.

Actually, she isn't 'of age' until she is past her second birthday. OFA will not clear hips until this date in a dog's life. (Something that should have come up in your homework.)

If she is just shy of two and has only had one season, I would say something is wrong. She should be approaching her THIRD heat by this time. Generally, female has her first heat somewhere between 4 and 8 months, and has her second and further consecutive heats about 6 months apart.

It is possible that the male she was with as a pup did internal damage. It's possible there is something else wrong with your girl.

At this point, only a vet will be able to determine what the problem is, if there is one.

And, no, because she didn't take on her first heat doesn't mean she isn't fertile. It could have been the wrong time, it could have been that the male had a natural low sperm count or had recently bred another female and thus had a low sperm count.

OR...it could mean there is a problem with her reproductive cycle.

Again, this is something you will need to discuss with your vet, who will likely send you to another, specialist, vet. And, for specialist, read BIG BUCKS to clear up any existing problem.

Sometimes if bred only once a female won'ttake. If you're planning on breeding her again would suggest breeding her three different times during her season. Some dogs come into season as young as 7 months and up to 1 year, but most are 1 year old for their fist season.Your pet should come back around within 6 months, but I have had them wait til 8 months since last season. If she doesn't take after 3 breedings the next time, would have her checked by your vet to see if something is preventing her from becommimg pregnant.

Ovulation is a percise timing. If only bred once might of been to late. The males semen lasts 7 days. Maybe that male had a low semen count or the timing was off. This does not mean she will not take. Of course you know you need to have her examined before her next heat so everything is in order. Heats dont always come every 6 months. Some once a yr and others every 8 months or 6months one time to 5 months the next. Its getting to know your dog. The best advice I can give is have her examined to make sure everything is okay plus the stud dog you choose will want vet clarification and particular tests run for the safety of their stud. Happy Mating.

I think you may have just gotten lucky with her round with the stray, are you going to pay for her stud or will studs owner get pick of the litter? the general rule is no monies exchange hands until the first live pup is born, I come from a full family of breeders sometimes the female dogs don't take on the first try you may even want to mate her a few times during this heat for her to take,if she indeed doesn't take this time I would have her checked by a vet, it's rare that a dog is not fertile but it does happen. hope this helps, Good Luck

Don't go by her first heat and breeding not taking. Maybe the stray male wasn't fertile??? Who knows but be glad it didn't take.

Start fresh. Get her cultured by a vet before the breeding. You don't want her to give the stud dog anything. Your vet will also be able to tell you when she is ready to be bred at her most fertile time.

Also make sure the stud dog is tested by his vet before you use him. You don't want your ***** to pick anything up from a stud dog either. A stud dog owner will require you to have your dog checked as you should have them check their stud dog.

Good breeding practices make successful breedings. Good luck!

Did you happen to mention what breed this dog is?
Different dogs are prone to different things.
Good luck anyway.
Maybe she just isn't supposed to have babies... hey, it happens.
Please, don't get rid of her if she can't concieve.

Being "REGISTERED" has NOTHING to do being BREEDING QUALITY!!!! No REPUTABLE breeder will TOUCH your PET.

As you are so TOTALLY IGNORANT of the BASICS of PROPER breeding & obviously IRRESPONSIBLE-nearly getting a DISASTEROUS "mis-mate"-,you have NO BUSINESS in even concidering breeding ANYTHING,let alone some POS *PET* bitc-h!!!
W/any luck at ALL,the thing is STERILE!
