Probably not. But it was. Even at private schools. Why? Because back then (before about 1985) people wouldn't be caught dead at the financial aid office. Going there meant not just that you were poor but that your parents where some kind of farm hand or something. So only the really POOR people borrowed money for school. Then the government said they were going to make colleges "affordable" And the government does this buy loaning you poor slobs more and more money! The more money they loan and "give" you the more the tuition goes up.

Here is my question: Do you kids know that if you would all fricking REFUSE to step foot into the financial aid office COLLEGE TUITION WOULD COME DOWN SO THAT YOU COULD AFFORD IT WITHOUT FINANCIAL AID?

I know you folks are young. but here is how it works. The cost of any product or service rises as more and more money is thrown at it. when the government makes money available to you and everybody else this allows you to pay for something you can't truly afford. This allows the schools to raise the tuition to a level above which the schools customers are actually able to pay. And YOU are the customers. Then they say,"don't worry about the high tuition, we will loan you the money!" The more they loan you, the more money the schools are able to charge. You will all learn this in Economics 101. If you all would REFUSE to play this game. Say "I'm sorry, I guess I can't go here because neither I nor my parents have $50000.00 a year" Then the schools will price the product (AND IT IS A PRODUCT) at a level that the customers can pay. End of lecture. Good night.

I'm not a "kid" I'm 53 years old and yes I remember when I could pay my own college tution. Howevr such is not the case any longer. The problem lies in the fact that not as many scholarships are offered any longer and they are no longer in the mega bucks denominations as they were prior to the late 70s because nowadays a $15,000.00 scholarship doesn't pay jack. I know because I have a daughter in college right now and if it weren't for financial aid SHE would not be able to afford to go because there is no way I could afford to send her on MY salary alone. As long as the cost of living keeps going up so will the cost of higher education, instructors have to be paid, as does the costs of running a college, electric bills, water bills, etc. You're just a wee bit off base blaming financial aid.

I paid for my first year of college by babysitting money saved from age 12 till I went to school. It was 1970 and I was only paid 50 cents an hour back in the sixties.

I don't think government loans is the cost of tuition going up. Salaries, building costs, etc. have gone up.

it is better don't get tuition, just study ur own way.Nowadays, it is a trend to hv tuition then only u can get a better exam result. But this is not the right way. a proper preparation,a good listening to ur class teacher, discuss the problem with ur classmate n note down the main points, every now n then try to memorise up.by doing these,i believe u can score all As in ur exam without getting tuition.
it is no harm to try n save lots of money n time.
hope u every success in ur exam!

It's actually not that expensive. I pay for it myself and think it is reasonable. It is a college degree, and that's life.
