Basically white wine goes with chicken or fish and red wine with red meat. But if you are eating chicken parm the red sauce may go better with a red wine. Depending on the dish the type of white or red changes. For example, if you are eating ham which is salty you might drink a sweet white like a reisling but with a certain chicken dish you may drink a chardonay. There really is a difference in the taste of a wine depending on what you pair it with. If you go to a wine store or a restaurant they shoudl be able to suggest something.

Whatever you like to drink with it. The old food rules do not really apply anymore. There are definately wines that are more food friendly than others. But you just have to go with your gut. Wines like Sparkling Wine, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Pinot Grigio, Sauv Blanc, Riesling are all very food friendly with tons of different types of food.
In the end it is what you like not what some wine person at a restaurant says. If I only really recognize say a white wine on the menu, then dang it, I will have it and enjoy every last drop.

Well in theory you should drink white wine with white meat and fish and red wine with red meat. Personally I don't think it matters any more,I drink what I want.

There really aren't strict "rules" anymore. A good guideline is light foods with white wine (fish, chicken, etc. and heavier foods with reds (beef, Italian cuisine)

You know what, F the wine snobs. If you feel like a Chardonnay with a steak, do it. If you feel like a Merlot with fish, do it. Don't become a victim of the establishment.
