I understand how you feel my dogs were doing this too and driving everyone crazy.

Apart from being unethical, the duct tape won't work because dogs need to be able to pant and it will probably get an infection or something. It also won't solve your root problem, he will still want to bark.

If you could convince him not to want to bark that would make you life a lot easier. I have four dogs and I have finally conquered the barking problem.

1. Exercise him everyday - this important because dogs bark when they have too much energy and are bored
2. Figure what is causing him to bark and see if you can maybe block out his view of the path or neighbours or whatever it is that making him bark.
3. don't lock him out all day alone, dogs do get lonely and need company and they get upset.
4. buy a citronella barking collar (not the electric ones) then every time he barks and you tell him no and he still barks then put the collar on him for 15 minutes - but then make sure you take it off again or he won't improve and he'll always need a collar.
5. Distraction method: everytime he barks shake a glass jar with some dry beans in it or something similar. When he stops even for a second, praise him and give him a treat. Keep this up until he stops everytime you shake the tin.

Consult your vet too.

We had the same problem with our dogs, and I know how frustrating it can get!!!
There are these great colars you can get at Pet Value where it sprays water at them when they bark. It's a little pricy but it works.!!!
Even if you ask some one at the Pet Value, there is usually a trainer on site, who could give you some advice.
About the whole duct tape thing, your dog will probably not understand that it's punishment for barking..... most dogs need punishment right away so that they can understand what they did was wrong....
Hope you find something that works!

Your dog cries excessively -- You need to: 1) get her a lot more exercise. Not just calm walks or playing on the patio, but really get out there -- take her on a slow morning jog (SLOW...don't drag her along -- but jog for 3 minutes, walk for 3 min, jog for three minutes, etc). You can teach her to retrieve and throw a ball for 15 minutes for exercise and she'll gain the same benefit. A good dog is a tired dog!! 2) Obedience training -- she has nothing to occupy her mind. Dogs need jobs too. Take her to obedience class or google "clicker training" on the internet. Teach her basic obedience, tricks and yes, the commands "bark" and "quiet". These will help a lot!! 3) join a dog club -- agility, obedience, rally obedience, flyball, etc. Get your dog out learning with other dogs. No money? Try 4-H if you're under 18! Most 4-H clubs have a dog club. 4-H is free! Your dog is just like a little kid who has to stay in her playpen all day. Toys lose their interest, and they just go a bit bonkers from nothing to do! I know you are frustrated, but putting tape around her mouth not only will not work, but will get you a conviction on animal cruelty. Far better for you and your dog to learn together how to become a good obedient pair!

Duct Tape Dog Collar

First off, why is the dog barking? the proper way to solve this problem is to understand why he's barking, and change that! if you can't change the reason, try humane behaviour modification. there are citronella collars (spray citronella instead of shocking them with a jolt) to distract them when they bark, but they only mask the problem. There are "husher" muzzles, but they can only be used under supervision. How about taking the dog to obedience classes? Is your dog excessively nervous? you may want to seek a vet to help. DO NOT DEBARK your dog. IT is not a good method of treatment. Debarking is actually a risk to the dog's life. it narrows the air passage when the scars build up from the vet cutting the vocal folds, and incidentally, it only alters the pitch of the bark, it does not make the dog bark-less. Please email me if you have more questions, but do not submit your dog to having it's mouth taped shut, that will be incredibly stressful and potentially dangerous for your pet.

I wouldn't suggest doing that. If you want to actually teach your dog to stop barking go to Petco or petsmart and get a bark collar, here is a web site. http://www.petsmart.com/global/search/search_results.jsp
They don't have to wear it forever just until they figure out that they need to stop barking. You can resell the collar on ebay when your done with it to get your money back.

Wrapping tape around his mouth would shut him up temporally but it wouldn't teach him what he was doing wrong it would just confuse/annoy him and be kinda sad. Also when dogs run around the yard they breath hard out their mouths and if there mouth is taped shut it will be harder for him to breath especially if he is congested at all.

That's just plain wrong. It's cruel to the dog and could cause him to suffocate or overheat if he can't open his mouth to breathe or pant. Muzzles are a bad idea for the same reason. I've used a bark collar before. My vet recommended the kind that squirts citronella because dogs can become fearful from the shock collars. The citronella collars are a bit pricy, but they have a really good success rate and they aren't cruel.

That is just cruel! try a shock color or behavioral trainig for your dog. Shock collars deliver a small shock to your dog when he starts to bark. Taping your dogs mouth shut is very wrong. Dogs overheat even in winter and pant to help cool their system. How will he do this if he has his mouth taped shut. What if another animal attacks him. What is he gonna do to defend himself? Don' t do this and if you do then maybe having a dog is not a good idea for you..

How would you like it if someone put duck tape over your mouth???? I just don't believe people !!!! If I seen that I would turn the person in, and I figure they would be charged with animal cruelty !!!! NO>>>>> I've never seen anyone do this. I did have a neighbor one time and I seen him rigging a can and strap to use as a muzzle. As he stood in his back yard trying to figure how to put it on the dog I said, "you're really not thinking about putting that on that dog are you?" His reply was yes and I said, I don't think so.He knew I loved dogs and probably figured I would report him so he never did it. He was right, I would have!!! I feel so sorry for some of these animals people claim to be their pets!!! DON"T DO IT!!!!!!

Whats the matter with you? Lets put tape on your mouth when you talk to much. Gee you have to work with the dog on this issue. He is doing what he is supposed to. Call a Vet or your local animal shelter for suggestions. Visit a pet store for info. But Don't Tape On His Mouth
