He's fine during the day, and he goes to sleep ok. He just wakes up in the middle of the night crying really hard. Nothing will calm him, I've tryed bringing him to bed with me, laying with him, singing, a nightlight, and nothing seems to work.
He's 3 years old, but he has speech problems so he can't tell me what's wrong. Any suggestions will be helpful.

My little girl doesn't communicate well and she sometimes wakes up and just screams uncontrollably for a little while. Most of the time, I believe she just has a nightmare. First I would take note of what does finally calm your child down. Singing? Rubbing his back or hair? Snuggling with his favorite teddy or blanket? If he just acts scared, it was probably a nightmare. Does he hold his stomach? Mess with his ears? Is he running a fever? Heck, it might even be growing pains or teething. If it continues, you might just want to call your pediatrician's or family doctors' office and speak to a nurse (or the doctor if you can). They might have some insight too. Then, they might suggest you bring him in.

My son is 2 1/2 and he does the same thing. I just comfort him, telling him Mommy and Daddy's hear for him, We love him, We will protect him, he is safe, It will be okay not to worry. One night I held his hand until he fell asleep. He woke up occasionally to make sure I was still holding his hand...I waited until he was knocked out until I left him. He usually has dreams that lions are going to eat him. It started one night, one dream, a lion bit his pinky. It's so sad when you feel like there's nothing you can really do to stop him from having crazy dreams. Don't get frustrated if you can't figure out what's wrong with your child....it may only upset him more. Just continue to tell him you are always there for him and whenever he's ready to tell you what's wrong, tell him to let you know.....that you will stop what you're doing to talk to him and comfort him and to help him solve his problems. I told our son that if a lion comes just to whack him and say, "Go Away Lion!!!" and he'll go away. Maybe you or his father disciplined him earlier and he's still upset that his mommy or daddy were mad at him. That also happened to us once. Maybe he's just having a scary dream, tell him to tell the figure to leave him alone and go away. Whatever it may be, just continue to praise him and let him know that you are his protectors, and he is loved sooooooooo much. Also remember that their imagination has sky rocketed...not only during the day but also in his dreams!!! Hopefully you and your son feel better soon. I will pray for you.

He needs to learn to self soothe so don't rush in there when he crys-let him be for a while and he will fall back alseep. It may seem like an eternity while he does-but it will be better for both of you.My son wakes sometimes in the night-he is 18 months old-but I do not go in there and within 5 min. he is back asleep.

I would take him to the doctor. It could be an ear infection or possibly even sleep apnea. It could also be completely fine and he stops it tonight, but nothing wrong with being careful!

the boy may be having nightmares. this is com on for children to do this. you should try to reassure him that he is safe and nothing is going to harm him. its very real and scary for him if he is having bad dreams. maybe you could change his eating habits before bed. if he has a full stomach at bed time he is more apt to have dreams.

Try taking him to the bathroom and then getting him a snack. Maybe some animal crackers, or something else that he really likes?

He could have an ear infection. Or just plain ole being scared. When kids start to dream or get their imagination, everything scares them.
