Islam means submission to the will of God Almighty. The root of the word Islam comes from the root "salam" meaning peace. There are 5 pillars:
1. The Testimony of Faith (Shahadah) - the declaration that there is none worthy of worship except Allah (Arabic:God) and that Muhammad is His last messenger.
2.Prayer 5 times a day
3. Alms giving
4. Fasting
5. Pilgramage to Mecca
We believe in Jesus, Moses, Joseph and many other biblical prophets, but there are some differences between the Quranic and Biblical narrarations.
We believe God is one, not 1 out of 3. We also believe he has no spouse nor any children, be it sons or daughters, metaphorically or physically.

Contrary to popular belief, Islam does not preach violence. War in Islam is only allowed for self defence. "Fight in the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God does not love transgressors" (2:190)

"If they seek peace, then seek you peace. And trust in God for He is the One that hears and knows all things" (8:61).

"If anyone takes one life without justification it is as if he has taken the lives of all humanity and if anyone saves one life it is as if one has saved the whole of humanity" (5:35).

"As for such as do not fight against you on account of (your) faith, and neither drive you forth from your homelands, God does not forbid you to show them kindness and to behave towards them with full equity: for, verily, God loves those who act equitably" (60-8).

Is that so violent?

*Islam is unlike any other religion because it is not merely a belief to which one adheres, but rather Islam is a complete way of life. Muslims put their beliefs into practice on a daily basis.
*Islam is named after a belief in one God, Allah, and submission to His will. In other words, Muslims put Allah’s Will before their own.
*Islam offers guidance to all humankind, regardless of race, culture, education level, sex, and socioeconomic status. Through Islam, we achieve peace with ourselves, with Allah, with our fellow man and even with the environment so that we can live in harmony with the entire universe as Allah intended.
*Islam’s simplicity, rationality and practicality are what characterize Islam as a unique and true religion.
Islam is a practical religion and does not allow indulgence in empty and futile theorizing. It says that faith is not a mere profession of beliefs, but rather that it is the very mainspring of life. Righteous conduct must follow belief in Allah. Religion is something to be practiced and not an object of mere lip service.
*It is a complete way of life and is present in every field of human existence.
*peace and tolerance,& how to respet ppl and treat them with morals and , freedom of opinions and expression.

and here is alink for the some basi beliefs of muslims:

islam is a very unique and peacefull religion which people misunderstand. muslims believe that there is no god but allah and prophet muhammad(peace be upon him) is the messenger of allah. we also believe that there were many more prophets/messengers such as jesus, moses, david, hud, noah, adah, joshua, joseph, aaron, abraham, etc..... our book which sets examples for our daily life is quran, which has never ever been changed. we believe in life after death, day of judgement and heaven and hell. islam stands on 5 pillars of islam: 1)shahadah(testimony of faith)-la illaha illallah, muhammad ur rasool alllah(there is no god but allah and prophet muhammad is the messenger of allah. 2)salah(prayer) there are five prayer every day which include bowing down etc... in order they are, fajr, zuhr, asr, maghrib, isa. 3) saum(fasting) we must fast every ramadan(islamic calenders 9th month)(from sunrise to sunset) which means no eating, drinking, smoking, having sex etc... we worship as much as possible and try to change ourselves in good ways. 4)zakaat(charity) its $2.50 out of $100. but that is if u have extra money thats just there. at the same time if u own any real not fake gold and silver jewelry, you must get it weighted and then pay for it. and all this money goes to poor people. and last but not least 5) hajj(pilgrimage) you must do this atleast once in ur life if u have enough money to do so. there is more but this is only part of it. hope u understand and look foward to understanding more. may allah help u find the right path and help with all ur problems and may he guide us all to the straight path.take care and salaam(pe@ce) out

The meaning of the word"ISLAM"is to obey God.
The most important case in Islam is to worship and believe in one God who is ALLAH,who has no partner or son.
Also believe in Quran which is ALLAH's book that revealed to prophet Muhammad peace upon him(who is the last prophet of ALLAH),and believe in all prophets and messengers of ALLAH that mentioned in the Holy Quran.

Islam is actually a word that means to submit to God's will. Muslim means someone who submits to God's will. God says if anyone chose to believe is something other that to submit to God's will, never will it be accepted of him. so die not except in the state of submission to God.

2:132 And this was the legacy that Abraham left to his sons, and so did Jacob; "Oh my sons! God hath chosen the Faith for you; then die not except in the Faith of islam (submission to God)."

2:133 Were ye witnesses when death appeared before Jacob? Behold, he said to his sons: "What will ye worship after me?" They said: "We shall worship Thy God and the God of thy fathers, of Abraham, Isma'il and Isaac,- the one (True) God. To Him we bow (in islam)."

3:19 The Religion before God is Islam (submission to His Will): Nor did the People of the Book dissent therefrom except through envy of each other, after knowledge had come to them. But if any deny the Signs of God, God is swift in calling to account.

3:67 Abraham was not a Jew nor yet a Christian; but he was true in Faith, and bowed his will to God's (Which is islam), and he joined not others with God.

3:83 Do they seek for other than the Religion of God.-while all creatures in the heavens and on earth have, willing or unwilling, bowed to His Will (Accepted islam), and to Him shall they all be brought back.

3:85 If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to God., never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost (All spiritual good).

3:102 O ye who believe! Fear God as He should be feared, and die not except in a state of Islam(submission to God).
