I am 14 and gonna get my license in March so i have to decide if i should become an organ donor. My mom said absolutely not b/c she was a nuro-nurse in the 90's and said that she saw some things dealing with organ donation that she wish she wouldent had. She said she dosent want a heart on my license. My dad and my older sisters said that i should become one. What do you think???

Because of your age you should listen to your mother. If you get in a accident, it would still be up to your parents even if you have that heart on your license, but when you're 18 you can do what you want.

You are very noble to consider giving the gift of life, shoudl the opportunity present itself. Whatever you decide, make sure to simply inform your family of your decision.

If you do decide to donate, you can log onto the national Donate Life registry, and your decision is recorded and is a legal document. Only you will be able to change your mind about your decision to donate, not your parents.

For what it's worth, only about 1% of the population even dies in such a way that they can donate their organs - for the most part, organ donors must die by becoming brain dead while on a respirator, because their organs would be kept alive by the machines, even if they have passed away.

There are 93,000 people waiting for a life-saving organ, and one person who donates can save up to 8 lives, and improve the lives of 50 others through tissue donation.

I think you should become an organ donor. I mean what's wrong with organ donatation. You can help save someone else's life just by donating your kidneys. It's like giving food to the poor. You'll feel happy just knowing that someone's life out there was saved because of your kindness. So donating your organs is a good deed to do.

It's a very generous decision that you are considering.
It is your decision, it is a very personal decision and your's alone to make. (Nevertheless, many states still require next-of-kin to affirm the decision, so your parents could still overrule your decision. Oh, well.)

You might want to postpone your decision until you are 18, in that case your parents really don't have any say over your decision to become an organ donor.

You might also want to consider other ways to help people in need: start donating blood when you reach 18, and get enrolled in the national blood marrow database.

If only more people thought like you, more lives could be saved. Good luck.

its not your mom's decision and its not your dad and older sister's either. its yours. if you donate then when someone needs a transplant then you can be glad to know that someone will live because you gave them a heart or a kidney. even though you will have passed, you will have the warm feeling that you will save a life. but if you want to be buried organs and all then that's fine. but remember its you decision. nobody can make it for you.

They're your organs and it's your decision.

The bottom line is if something did happen your parents can still say no.
