Orgasms are neccessary. They release vaginal fluids and help the sperm move. The cervix also opens like the other person said. If a woman has an orgasm during sex on certain days of the month, she's more likely to have a boy. So female orgasms do serve a purpose.

During orgasm, the cervix actually contracts in a way that pushes semen towards the eggs.
But, you're right, reproduction doesn't depend on such an event.
Actually, a male doesn't have to have an orgasm either. Ejaculation can (and does) occur w/o orgasm. In fact, it can occur w/o an erection as well.

Upon orgasm the vaginal contractions will help to suck semen up in the direction of the cervix. The cervix, upon orgasm, will pulse downward into the pool of semen (those are the two one needless to say assuming that the male ejaculates first). The clitoris is the only human organ it is sole purpose is for exhilaration. It has no reproductive function. a woman does not would desire to have an orgasm to alter into pregnant, however the adult males possibilities of having yet another shot at it are very much superior! :)

The orgasm causes the UTERUS to contract which helps suck the sperm inside through the cervix, which is open for only a few days each month, in the days leading up to and after ovulation. It also releases fluid in the vagina, which makes the pH balance more sperm friendly. Otherwise, the vagina tends to be a hostile environment for sperm.

Female orgasm is actually thought to bring sperm closer to the cervix allowing for an increase in conception.

While they don't always have an effect on reproduction, they work to balance the hormonal health by stimulating the production of oxytocin (which some believe helps in sperm transport).

Note that they serve equally no purpose for males. The feeling is not the same as the goop coming out.

They do serve a purpose. Thats why when trying to have a baby...you have to work it...it increases the chance of pregnancy.
