If the official website says they are allowed, they must be. I'd suggest you print that out and bring it with you. Most decisions are left up to the security personnel on site, and some are not aware of all the rules. Arguing with them almost never help.
Always be ready to just surrender it if they won't budge. It is not worth the fight and problems it will cause for you and others behind you.

I would print out your answer from the airport and bring it with you.
I was in Heathrow airport shortly after 9/11 and witnessed security removing the knitting needles from a very upset elderly lady.

My mom knits alot and the knitting needle policy has varied over the past couple of years. Call the airline and ask. Just call their 800 number.

You may have problems with the metal ones, just ask the airline to be sure. They might allow the plastic needles.

I took a crochet hook on a Delta flight and knitting needles on a Southwest flight this summer, and it was fine.

They don't allow tweezers or metal nail files, now why would they allow knitting needles. What can you do with tweezers? Tickle them to death?
Whereas with knitting needles you could do at least some damage and therefore I do not think they are allowed.
