When the recipe calls for water, I use milk or cream, instead of oil, try butter or margarine. The rest is what you feel like.

I start by using applesauce instead of oil. This not only makes the cake a healthier choice but it makes it lighter. Then I throw in whatever I have on hand.
Nuts of any kind work great! (I've even cracked, shelled, and slivered Brazil nuts and added them to the frosting of a cake.)
Cereal (especially Musilix or oatmeal) work as good "add ons" too.
Peanutbutter is good in some cakes.
Also go crazy with chocolate chips (or butterscotch/white chocolate/peanutbutter/etc.)
I've added pudding mix, trail mix, and certain fruits are good too.
Dried coconut adds a homemade touch and works wonders in a German Chocolate cake mix. But don't stick with the ones that make sense. Be bold and creative and see what you can come up with!
Good Baking!

I make "Citrus" cakes from boxed mixes. I just cut the water measurement in half and substitute the other half with lemonade or orange juice. I use only white cake or yellow cake mixes for these and bake them in a bundt pan. I ice the cake with a confectioner's sugar and water mixture. I'll add a 1/2 teaspoon of the the citrus juice into the icing mix. I never told anyone who had a piece of the cake I used a box mix. Everyone loved it. They all thought I made it from scratch. Try it. Enjoy!

after the cake cools, slice it down the middle from the sides, spread on a layer of whip cream or even strawberry preserves (or your favorite kind), you can even put pudding in the middle, then lay top layer of cake back on and ice as usual. We've even crushed candy bars and mixed it in the whip cream and spread it in the middle. We took a strawberry cake and put starwberry yogurt in the middle, then iced it with whip cream. You can do the same thing with icecream in the middle, and pour chocolate syrup over top. You can even try fresh fruit.

One important thing I learned is to substitute milk or half and half for the water. Makes a big difference! Try it, you'll like it!! HA HA

If you are going to go to all the trouble to customize a cake mix, why not just bake it from scratch? That way you don't have to lie about it.
