ok, I know if two sets of twins got married, obviosly there kids wouldn't be identical but is it true if they had them on the exact same day and the hospital mixed the babies up, by using the DNA would the hospital be able to tell which child belonged to which couple?
it's kind of hard to explain my question but I don't think they'd be able to because both sets of parents have the same DNA and although the two kids have different DNA, the DNA they came from was the same.

thanks!

just a few more details:

Foot/Finger Prints have nothing to do with DNA.. even idtentical twins have different finger prints.

also, if it were two sets of twins incase i didn't make that clear... girls taking an anatomy corse at my school didn't know the answer about the finger prints so it got me curious about all of this.

Hi! I'm the mother of identical twins and have a friend who is an identical twin. Here's a few thoughts:

1. Identical twins DO have the EXACT SAME DNA. If a set of female identical twins married a set of male identical twins their offspring would genetically be siblings. (Even though emotionally/legally they would be cousins.)

2. It would not be possible to determine who's child was who's based on DNA because both sets of parents have the same DNA.

3. However, they would be able to tell via fingerprinting who belonged with which set of parents. Hospitals fingerprint the mother then take footprints of the baby at birth. So they would have a record of which fingerprints/footprints belong with which set of parents.

Hope this helps!

Ok...saw a story on a news show once about a one set of identical twins that married another set. When they had children thier kids weren't only cousins, but they were technically siblings because thier parents were identical twins. Identical twins share the same DNA, however if the twins were faternal, then they should be able to tell them apart. But...that's just what I saw on 60 minutes or something.

I'm thinking if they did the usual footprint on paper they
could tell the difference, because even if the DNA is identical the
footprints would be different, I could be wrong, but its a darn good question.

Camm300: BOTH parents of BOTH children are identacle twins,
so a DNA test should be inconclusive....

Yes the hospital would be able to tell because even in idnetical twins their dna is slightly different, not by much but enough.

yes because of the other half of the dna comeing from the spouse. identical twins dna is identical, but the spouses dna isnt so the childrens dna will be different

they dont have the same dna- and you didnt mention what kind of twins? Are you saying both of the parents who got married were born identical twins?

Nobody has the exact same DNA, DNA is like fingerprints or snow flakes rather, they can be very close in similarity but not exact measurements so the hospital WILL be able to tell.

Ali D is correct and the hospital wouldn't mix them up because they use wrist bands for identification! Besides, each mother has a natural instinct about their child, after all the child was part of the mothers body itself.

haha.. the question you're asking is the comparable that that's been on my recommendations for years.. i think of that, they won't no longer seem as "cousins" yet greater probably as siblings... that's how my recommendations works.. yet i in no way experienced that, so i'm no longer one hundred% specific.. stable question!! :)
