The health benifits are great (not having to worry about testicular cancer), he will stay a sweet pet (not lifting his leg & urinating to mark his territory everywhere - sometimes in the house! - when he reachs sexual maturity; not bolting to escape when a dog within 2 miles is in heat, taking the chance of being hit by a car, stolen, poisioned, etc; not becoming aggressive with other male dogs & possibly people), and you will have the good feeling of knowing you are a responsible pet owner & your dog is not going to contribute to the pet overpopulation problem. It's a win-win situation!

Cost varies by area and by vet. But there are many pro's and no con's. The dog will be less aggressive. Will not wander particularly when females are in heat. Most importantly will not mark it's territory especially in the house. Neutering a male dog prevents cancers and other problems. There are so many homeless dogs right now that you don't need to breed your dog and produce more dogs. So the question is not why should you neuter your dog? It is why wouldn't you neuter your dog?

First of all, Pugs are already hyper dogs. Neutering should calm him down, somewhat.
Second, removing the testicles, also removes the chance of him getting testicular cancer. Testicular cancer is very common in older, intact dogs.
Third, it greatly reduces the chance of him getting prostate cancer.
Fourth, he won't feel the urge to breed, so he won't go in search of a mate. When a dog goes looking for a mate, he's at risk of being hit by a car, becoming lost, etc.
Basically, having your puppy neutered will help keep him healthier and happier, thus making him a better companion for you.
As far as cost goes, it varies from region to region.

We tend to desex dogs and cats here at around 5 months of age, just before the first season normally comes in and early enough to deter any bad habits that the animal may form...like spraying or cocking the leg on anything that moves...
The reason behind waiting till 5 months is generally because the animal can handle the anesthetic alot better at 5 months than 3 months...I guess it depends on the anesthetic that he uses.
Desexing can vary in price from place to place, but if you have a well trusted vet that you use, even if they are a little more expensive I would recommend you go to them...
I would certainly have your dog desexed though, it can help with a better temperament, some testicular cancers, and overall improvement in behavior and manners.

I would get it neutered at about 6 months of age. Vet too busy to answer questions, find one that has a secretary and a decent vet tech so someone can answer your questions. Most vets have a schedule for fees and someone should be able to tell you something. If he is too busy, maybe you should find another vet.
Good luck.

I've had two male Great Danes and had them both neutered. They don't seem to realize it or care if they did. The only change in behavior that I noticed was the my first dog no longer bother to sent mark (read pee on) every single tree and bush that we pasted. 12 weeks seems kind of young to me though, I wait until at least six months. My dogs were one year and six months when they were neutered. In any case, thousands if not millions of unwanted dogs are kill every year in this country alone, unless you have serious plans to breed this dog in a responsible manner you should have him neutered.

unless you are planning on studing out you pug you should get im neutered. it will make him less aggressive, He won't hump as much when he is older. He won't be as territorial, over all he will be a better dog. I don't think that there are any con's to getting a dog fixed. When i got my dog neutered it cost around two hundred dollars. It was so easy with him, we had no problems afterward, he didn't even need a cone.
good luck

I also have a pug puppy who is neutered. I can't imagine him not being that way. Unless you are planning on becoming a breeder (which is very expensive and time consuming) I would definitely get him neutered.

I have 2 little dogs (not Pugs but they are little) and i waited till they were 2years old to have it done and i wish i would have done it sooner. They are so much calmer, don't bark as much, and no more marking in the house (which they only did on few occasions)!! Plus it is also healthier for them as far as not being able to get cancer there and no infections

You should probably wait a while more. It is not expensive (some vets do it for free) and it is an advantage to your community because if the animal goes into the wild and mates it will create even more homeless animals than are already out there.
