Jesus Christ is an historical figure, whereas Hercules is Greek mythology. Is there any hospital named after the "god" Hercules? How about time, like 1987 A.Z. (After Zeus). Go beat your feet somewhere else!

Good question! The answer is no.

Myth and Folklore is a religious graveyard. When people stop believing in a religion, it becomes mythology. When people stop practicing spirituality it becomes folklore. Unfortunately so many religions still hold influence in the modern world that they merit discussion in open forum.

Perhaps someday we can move this entire discussion to the section on "myth", and with a strictly anthropological interest we can observe how mankind nearly destroyed itself over such a silly bunch of lies.

Well, the difference between Religion and Mythology is...well...public opinion. Religion has a mass of practitioners and at present day, conduct some sort of worship.
Mythology is the same, but it was in the past and no longer done.

Religion and Spirituality tends to focus on "philosophical content" of words or teachings or systems of thought, which is more abstract.

Mythology and Folklore tends to focus on "cultural means of expression," which is more concrete.

Given the question topics I have seen under both, there appears to be a major difference. So if having two separate sections helps Askers and Answerers focus on interests they share, then that serves the purpose -- to organize questions by topics.

Things are folklore and mythology when people do not believe it. I might believe that Thor is a myth, but if you believe and follow him, it is then your religion and then belongs here. Religion and Spirituality are things actively believed and practiced, though they may be mythical to others. To call something "folklore" or "myth" means you dont believe it. If you dont believe in any of the religions discussed here, you are free to discuss them in the folklore sectin :)

Here's the difference between the 2:

Mythology is accepted as stories by everyone, religion still has people who believe in it. With any luck, we'll be able to do this one day...

Religion most of the time implies monotheism and there really is nothing like it.

Monotheism- The belief that there is 1 God that created the universe as well as humanity and is going to judge it one day.

You read through mythology and it is mostly man's silly attempt to create gods and personify them and even naturalize them.

First of all, there's enough traffic on this category without merging the two. Secondly, for those of us who believe in religion, we see it as a very real thing. Your question tells me that you don't.

No. There are far more rational people in the "Mythology and Folklore" section.

One is faith and the other is fiction as far as a belief system is concerned. I think your question is on the insulting side. I'd love to be wrong. For more of an education and further definition go to
