Don't know. Egyptians definitely believed it. Apparently, they believed a baby could be conceived by masturbation. It is possible Christianity came up with the idea from the Egyptians. However, I think it may be true that Mary became pregnant without any sperm being involved. It is a matter of faith.

I believe this because a miracle took place in my life one day, and I was born again, completely unexpectedly, and I became a totally changed person in an instant. One minute I was hating God, the next minute I was loving Him. One minute I was hopeless and deeply depressed; the next minute I was filled with peace, joy and hope. I could go on for hours telling of the change that took place in me. That was over 35 years ago and it keeps getting better. When it happened, I didn't know much about the Bible - but I knew I had encountered God. Perhaps a year later I read about my experience described by Jesus in the Bible. Since then I have come to experience much of what is described in the Bible. I know by experience that the Scriptures are the Word of God. Therefore I believe that this event, clearly recorded in the Luke, Chapter 1 and Matthew Chapter 1 are a faithful testimony of what God did.

Jehovah provided a truly remarkable demonstration of his protective power when he transferred the life of his only-begotten Son to the womb of the Jewish virgin Mary. An angel told Mary that she would “conceive in [her] womb and give birth to a son.” The angel explained: “Holy spirit will come upon you, and power of the Most High will overshadow you.” (Luke 1:31, 35) Seemingly, God’s Son had never been so vulnerable. Would the sin and imperfection of the human mother blemish the embryo? Would Satan be able to injure or kill that Son before He was born? Impossible! Jehovah formed, in effect, a protective wall around Mary so that nothing—no imperfection, no hurtful force, no murderous human, nor any demon—could damage the growing embryo, from the moment of conception on. Jehovah continued to protect Jesus during his youth. (Matthew 2:1-15) Until God’s appointed time, his dear Son was unassailable.

Man learns from observation of, and working with, the materials of God’s creation. Paul wrote of God: “‘He catches the wise in their own cunning.’ And again: ‘Jehovah knows that the reasonings of the wise men are futile.’”—1Co 3:19, 20; By his own wisdom man could never find out “the work of the true God,” never gain solid knowledge of how to solve man’s highest problems.—Ec 8:16, 17

My life experience.

Of course I believe it. Explain it? Well, I believe in God. That means I believe in the supernatural. I have absolutely no problem believing that or any of the other miracles inthe Bible. When I surrendered my life to Christ, I had already come to the conclusion: "If I'm going to believe in God, I will believe in the powre of God. So once I am a Christian, there will be no problem with any of the miracles in the Bible."
In fact, what I had a problem understanding, was why people claiming to be Christian were debating about how literal they could take the Bible miracles. I found that really strange. Did they believe or didn't they?
If your an atheist, of course, there is no way you can believe those things.

Yes I do believe in the Power of God . If God can make a man from dust and breath life into him , He can definitely make a man without the need for sperm .
Union of sperm and egg to form a baby is the law of nature which God Himself set . He does'nt have to abide by the law of nature. He is The creator and is above the law . Thats why its called a miracle .
Mary conceived the Word of God which the angel brought from God . The whole universe is formed by "THE WORD of God" .
Read Genesis 1 " He spoke and it came into being"
The same Word became the baby in Mary's womb when she received the Word from the angel and said let it be done.
We cannot understand the works of God with human mind coz , we think only in terms of laws of nature eg:gravity .
Ask God to make it clear to you . Its deep but true.

If God could create a woman reproductive parts by simply speaking them into existence, as well as a man's, there is no difficulty believing God could germinate one of her eggs. It is going from a greater to a lesser. The greater being creation from nothing (refering to Adam and Eve), the lesser being creation from something (Eve). If I were to speculate, I would say if God could create the entire universe without any resources, by simply speaking it into existence, than again it is no problem to believe he could speak male sperm into a womans body. In fact, it had to be without a human father because Scripture teaches that the sin nature is passed down from the fathers. The seed that would become Jesus had to be divine, untainted by sin.

You're talking about faith. It's like" explain why you would ask such a question that has little consequence in your existence"

But, okay I'll bite. If it's possible for the universe to spring up out of nothingness, then it's not too far a stretch to believe a woman can bare a child with out sex.

Yes. Isaiah prophesied of a virgin giving birth and His name would be Immanuel (God with us).

A virgin became pregnant with a baby conceived of the Holy Spirit. A virgin had a baby named Yeshua (Hebrew meaning He shall save). He had to be born of a virgin without sin nature. Like the 1st Adam before the fall. He had to be tempted like the 1st Adam. Jesus didn't sin. He was the Sinless Lamb of God, who shed His Own Blood for the remission of our sins. Death couldn't hold Sinless in the grave. Jesus raised from the Dead.

The First Adam we inherit the sin nature & the wages of sin is death. The Last Adam (Jesus) we are spiritually reborn & is given the gift of eternal life.

In Genesis it is also prophesied that the Womans seed would defeat the Snakes lies. Jesus overcame satan and death, because He was the Womans seed, without sin nature (sperm) & didn't sin like the 1st Adam when tempted like the 1st Adam.

Part of being a Christian is having an open mind. We believe in Miracles and that God can do whatever He wants for whatever reason. I believe Jesus was concieved of a virgin, this made Him exempt from original sin (no, sex is not original sin but original sin is passed down through normal childbirth) If God wanted His Son to come to earth in this fashion, then He could make it happen. I don't find that any harder to believe than God creating man from dust of the ground and woman from man's rib. You either believe in miracles or you don't. One is not harder to perform than another to God.
